Fireplace done - one step closer!
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! The plugs will for sure be changed out :-) LOL! DH hates them now....it is way to stark I completely agree. I was going to go tomorrow and pick some up. Thank you for the suggestion of the almond. Even DD said "OH NO MOM! The 'Lectrician' messed up and put those bright color plugs in!" She didn't even notice that the white plugs where there before the rock :-) I thought that was cute. Just got back from shop vac'ing the floor for the tile guys tomorrow. There must have been 2 inches of dust and little pieces of rock on the counters!! I feel like I am nesting with this need to clean. I cleaned the windows Sunday and you would never know! LOL! Off to bed, I am beat! Kel...See MoreNow that you are done or almost done with your new home
Comments (28)HA = that's funny "buildinghome". We had zero problems, not one tiny hitch. Yet the home started off at $240K and we kept adding little things. Ended up at $253K. Little things add up. Double the size of the deck, better appliances, better furnace (make sure you get a good furnace and not cheap builders furnace). Upgrade from a cheap Lennox gas fireplace (a true builders box - run away if you can) to a Mendota. Make sure the water heater is not sitting on the floor (rust). Make sure you have a regular door in the garage so you will not have to open the big door all the time. 12x14 foot deck is too small for real use, we doubled the size and because we face south we used wood and not composite with gets REAL hot in summer. If you can get an extra foot of overhang do it. Good for shade and run off. If you are on a hill make sure the garage is on the downhill side of the house. Make sure you have windows on all four sides. I'm surprised to see so many spec homes with no windows in the sides! Wash tub in the laundry room is a must! Outdoor faucets, put them higher up so you do not have to crawl on the ground to hook up the hose. If you are on a budget, get the expensive lights for the living areas and go cheap in the bathrooms and other areas. Then once you get back on your feet buy the good lights for the bathrooms. Paint everything neutral until you see how the light falls in the house. Don't go fancy YET! We would also build in a heartbeat . . . . . if we had too! Comments (9)We've had the TV over the fireplace in a niche for 8 years. Never been uncomfortable and no one has complained which is not unusual since every home on our street was built with a TV niche years ago. Since we have the niche we don't have the same issues w/ decorating the mantle or placement of other equipment (it is under a shelf built by DH). However, in shopping recently for a new TV we noted that it seems very common now to mount the TV to the wall using the bracket that permits movement of the TV in/out, right/left, and slightly tilted; often wires are run within the wall down to the other equipment placed in a cabinet to the side of the FP. Good luck!...See Morefireplace almost done.
Comments (27)WOW!! Now that's a beautiful change for the better! You are so lucky to have a kiln and all. I would love to have one. My Mom gave one away to a carpenter as payment for work done on her house. Now she wishes I had started my trip into mosaicland two years earlier. She would have handed it over. ARGH!! Wonderful work!!...See MoreRelated Professionals
