Bathroom Tile Refinishing with Mosaic - Color Ideas?

I have a bathroom with a colorful tile and elaborate mosaic sunshine along the shower wall. It’s a beautiful tile, but the color is not for me! I’d like to have the tile refinished in a modern design and typically lean toward white, grays, muted blues or greens. The floor is a light grayish blue that we don’t intend to change.
If I go with a shade of white for a majority of the tile, I don’t know what to do with the sunshine.
Any ideas?

How do you plan to have the tile "refinished"? As far as I know, that isn't something you can do with ceramic tile.

One of the bathrooms in my previous house ... this is the only way I know of "refinishing" that type of tile or most tile out there! We kept the floor tile, which was a newer stone-look porcelain.

Whoa that’s quite an image of your refinishing project :)
We’ve spoken to a couple of contractors who mentioned sanding/priming/painting as an option. We’ve yet to have them on site to commit to a detailed plan however.

Dottie - I could not have done this without an educated designer - it's not just about the design choices although I would never have come up with design choices as my brain isn't hardwired in those kinds of visually imaginative ways. I can appreciate things but I don't know how to pull them together and I wouldn't have the ability to figure out where to even start in terms of the sea of vendors. I am good about researching appliances and functions but get lost in the sea of visual possibilities :-) And I can't even imagine dealing with codes and such since Los Angeles is code crazy - I wanted to move some floor electrical outlets up a bit from the floor as I found it difficult to reach them when I had some hip issues so I was thinking about for the future - I was told that if I move a plug, the whole thing has to be rewired back to the panel box. And the darn kitchen sink has to be approved by the UL LOL - who would think a kitchen sink could be dangerous.

Plenty of rugs won't save you. I was giving the lab a bath. He bolted out the bathroom door after the bath and I rushed to close the door because it was drafty. He scrambled the rugs on the way out, I slipped and fell into the door jamb and broke my wrist. Would not use the tiles that are linked on a floor. They have R9 Slip Resistance rating which is the least slip resistant rating.

For a more modern log home you would pick colors the same way you would in a regular home - bring all your pieces together and draw a color out of them...if you are really feeling the country then you may want to be in sage greens, pumpkin, fall reds and things like that. I do agree - no need to paint before cabinets go in - don't rush... find colors you are drawn to and paint poster boards and hang them up and look at them for a week or so... Good luck!

FWIW, I have Calacatta marble basket weave tiles on my bathroom floor and shower floors. The grout is a soft gray and I have no issues with maintainance. It doesn't appear to be dirty and it just blends in with the rest of the tile. If after a number of years. I have had it installed for almost 3 years and it still looks the same as when it was installed. I love having small tiles as it makes me feel secure. I don't have need a rug or anything else to add visual clutter because the surface - even if it is wet or my feet are damp is so grippy. That is also true of the shower. I had larger tiles prior to my remodel and I felt I needed to be ultra cautious wherever I put my feet. At least for me the issues of grout maintenance and marble etching or discoloration or whatever were wildly overstated as - with normal maintenance and not fanatical maintenance - they still look great. If at some point a decade from now, they need to be restored, it is not that expensive to have a professional come in to clean the grout and marble. My building has it done periodically in the common areas and it always looks as good as new and those floors get significantly more wear than my bathrooms do.

Refinish how? Get that tile out redo the waterproofing and get what ever tile you like for that surround . The pic is a bit distorting the tub but it looks shallow too so new tub new tile is IMO the only way to go.

Agreed with others above. Redo the shower with white subway tiles to keep it neutral.

Coating tile with epoxy paint is done by specialists, not regular painters, because of the fumes involved with curing the finish. The finish may last a couple years with careful cleaning in daily use but much longer in guest bathrooms that are rarely used. When it's done, it shows all the tile grout patterns, so the sunburst would be there in a much more subtle way. It will still look like the 1970's.

That being said, it would be better to install completely different tile that you love with good new waterproofing.

The professional tub refinishers can refinish tile using same process... but not going to be as durable as original tile. If you are artsy with a lot of time on your hands you could mask out the squares and parts that are red, orange and pink and paint those in some versions of gray, and leave the golds and browns to be accent color for the gray. A gray and white interior benefits from having a third (10% of area) accent color.

So... no way to re do the blue gray floor tile? Painting those IMHO could be more durable as they wouldnt be constantly immersed in water as is shower tile. The wall gray is browner and relates better to the wall tiles. Well its a thought - do whatcha wanna :-)
