China Cabinet Redo (Painted)
Comments (74)Thank you, Rob! My formula is: 2 cups paint 5 tbsp Plaster of Paris 2 tbsp warm water I mix the water and PoP until smooth, making sure all lumps are out, then add to latex paint (usually eggshell). Mix well. This is the basic recipe. I've made it thicker, and thinner, by more/less water. I've found that too much water will make the mixture too thin, and the finished result may scratch easily. This amount goes a LONG way, but will save in a sealed container very well. Or, you can cut it all down. I'd love to try AS paint one of these days, and compare. But so far, I've been very happy with mine. (We sell our pieces). I have done tabletops, and posted the results here, but I'm not sure how to search for threads here. We poly some tops, wax others. I prefer a matte poly for protection (usually 3 coats). Here is one table, it was an extremely damaged 80's golden oak dining table, we did a checkerboard on it:...See MoreDo I paint island/built-in china cabinet/desk same as cabinets?
Comments (9)I love frenchkitty's kitchen. I used her kitchen as one of my inspiration photos for my new kitchen, last year. I did not know what colors she used. (Thanks). First, I totally agree that you should paint the desk the same as the cabinets. Second, any reason you are not going to paint the bricks on the island??? Do they match some other bricks in your home? You could paint them the same as the cabinets if you wanted to downplay them or leave them if you like them. Third, I used SW antique white as our trim color thoughout our home, plus all the kitchen cabinets. The painter did glaze the kitchen cabinets with a brown glaze mix and I just love them. They are a soft cream with the brown antiqued look. We used SW Ivoire for all the walls and now I want to repaint the kitchen walls a deeper tone of gold or caramel. I am little confused. What color are you leaning toward for the china cabinet? I liked Patty Cakes idea of using a color and then perhaps glazing over it. I am not crzay about the idea of brown. Too safe and boring. I do love the French blues or perhaps a soft bluish green. If depends on what other colors you use in your kitchen and home. You actually could also do a bright shade of color with no glaze. It all depends on your taste. But not brown. Sorry....See MoreWhat is this antique china cabinet with gold paint finish worth?
Comments (6)"I have been told it is at least 200 yrs old" By whom? And why do they make that claim? What I am seeing is a 1960s or later china cabinet done in the "French Provincial" style or maybe "Mediterranean" ... and painted gold in an attempt to make it look better. My criteria: the flat scalloped framing around the glass, the same flat framing effect of the doors surrounding the oddly Mediterranean faux Spanish things on the doors, and the realistic rose band of carving ... it's an accumulation of unrelated design elements that no amount of gold paint can make very valuable. If it's well-made and still sturdy ... I'd give $50 at a thrift store for the storage aspect of it....See Morewhat colour do I paint this china cabinet ?
Comments (4)JudyG Designs - Judy thank you so much for your advice. The big cabinet will be gone, you are right I just needed a nudge. The smaller one does fit but I love it in my kitchen so it has to stay there because all my everyday dishes are in it and it feels good everytime I get something!lol I found curtains I love in my closet that have some burnished tones ( I think) I will attach a picture. Yes I can totally paint my table chelsea grey with black legs. can I leave my chair legs wood, I hope so. Chandelier, thank you for that too. I have an old sideboard from my grandmother who lived in an old red brick farm house in the middle of nowhere behind a lake. she bought paint on sale and painted EVERYTHING the aqua blue colour you will see on the sideboard pic. it takes over. hence maybe this is why I need decorating advice, I take after her!lol My question is can I put the sideboard in the dining room? Should I white wash it or paint it a certain colour. Again I am so grateful for your help...See MoreRelated Professionals
