Newly installed soapstone question

Candice Jones
last month

Hello, we just had soapstone countertops installed in our pantry and the fabricator did apply a sealer and said they never need to be oiled. I guess I thought soapstone was lighter and that we would be able to oil/wax them to bring out the color but they are very dark already and adding a wax did nothing to the color, only made it feel greasy and look splotchy. Is there a reason our countertops aren’t functioning like true soapstone should? Even the showroom we bought them from said traditional soapstone that needs to be oiled doesn’t exist much anymore and it’s primarily sealed so no maintenance is needed, which is obviously not what we’re looking for (sigh)
