Paint Windows Exterior

Window trim white or navy? Shutters or no shutters?

We had to replace a window in our 1870's home. The trim is white, while the rest of the house trim is navy. Should we paint this one window navy or paint the others white? Shutters? And what about the railings by the side door of the house...paint white or navy?

I would paint it navy to match the rest of the windows. I very much like the dark trim, I think it looks terrific.

The navy trim is too dark for me with white siding and white windows. Or am I seeing aluminum storms over painted windows? If you are doing shutters (and they are real and operational) I would paint the trim white and have navy shutters.

Thank you for your reply. There are so many windows of various sizes and distances apart, I just am not sure how to approach the shutter situation...and I'm afraid it could be quite costly . Do you think all white (house and window trim) would be too dull, or could it be a classic look? How it looks currently is how it looked when we bought it. Obviously, landscaping will help as well.

brendainnj, actually if you have pic to share you can get succinct advice. The look you are contemplating could look great or it could look 'off'. It all depends an the architecture of the house and the furnishing you have. From the way you describe it, a picture window in a ranch, where the trim is probably not very substantial I am guessing it may not look right. But maybe not.............

I think the shutters is a regional thing. I live in CA, most houses are newer ranch style. The majority have shutters on them and they are ALL decorative! I never knew what functional shutters looked like until I joined this forum. I think for people on the East Coast with the older homes and real shutters they will never look quite right, but for here, in my area, they are typical of the majority of homes you will see. Sort of like crown molding or other trim, purely for decorative purposes only. FWIW, when we remodeled our home we removed the wood siding and shutters and stuccoed the home and used decorative foam stucco trim.

IMO those windows do not suit this house. I am glad you are removing those silly shutters. What are the larger windows going to be like? I can’t see that there is much space at the top of those windows for larger trim on the main floor but you could add some to the upper windows.

Hey you are right I think you should lighten your brick it looks better and is timeless and will bring it more up to date but I think you should lime wash it romabio has many different lime washes and natural masonry paints it allows your brick to breath and looks beautiful and it will age beautiful as well

No shutters; as you said, your windows are different sizes and placements and shutters would emphasize that.

I like the dark trim for contrast, but that is purely opinion. As stated above, the shutters would only highlight window size incongruity. Wouldn't do that.

Your house does not need shutters. It has very nice looking trim. I like the navy and would keep that. The front door would also look nice painted the navy.
