we are considering Mount Blanc dolomite for our kitchen. thoughts?

We are empty nesters who like to cook but aren’t wine drinkers. We’re considering dolomite for our counters because we fell in love with its marble like appearance. We’re thinking Leathered for our island and polished for perimeter. Maybe maybe not backsplash. Any thoughts on dolomite versus Quartzite or granite? I’m aware of the differences geologically, I’m looking for personal thoughts and experiences. We do have some quartzite and granite as backs ups.

Dolomite

Dolomite is a relatively soft stone, so it can be badly damaged if exposed to excessive force. It can also be scratched and stained quite easily. Dolomite is also very susceptible to etching if exposed to acidic chemicals or abrasive cleaners. 

Overall, dolomite shares many of the same weaknesses as marble although in comparison it is far less physically durable but much more heat resistant and much less porous. 

Quartzite is very hard and resistant to stains and etching.

Here's a question for you: Would you still have picked this slab if it had been granite?

I am curious because you pointed out that it was dolomite, and I had recently read a thread on here where the OP (a kitchen and bath shop owner) stated that his customers buy quartz and do not buy granite.

I would think that there is a granite that would look like your dolomite and would not have the shortcomings of dolomite, Yes? No?

If so, are folks avoiding granite no matter what it looks like simply because it is called granite?

...anything else I've not thought of? Don't forget about ventilation for your new range. In your inspiration pics (I'll direct link below) I notice they have a nice hood, and no OTR microwave. The MW is located on the shelf elsewhere, that's good. There are lots of posts about ventilation/exhaust on the Appliances forum. Here are some basics: - rough rule of thumb is 10 cfms per 1000 btu's. E.g., if you have 4 burners with each one at 15,000 btu's = 60K. You should have a 600 cfm hood. - ideally, the hood should be 6" wider than the range (i.e. 3" wider on each side). Many people can't fit this "ideal", so a hood the same width as your range is fine. - Try if you can to get a hood that is 24" deep front to back (many are 22" deep). Like my previous point, this would be the ideal. If a 24" deep hood does not fit the budget, the 22" depth is fine. - baffle filters are better than mesh filters, because mesh will clog quickly with grease and lose efficiency. - when installing ductwork for the hood, make sure it is 8" or 10" in diameter. Most hoods require at least 8". There are some hoods that are OK with 6" diameter duct, but they're harder to find. If your duct is too small for your hood, you will get increased noise and decreased efficiency. Regarding your sink, many people here have the apron front sink without the backsplash. Would look awesome in front of a window. There are so many threads about the apron front sink, I'll Link one below. The apron front sink comes in fireclay, stainless steel, and cast iron (the Kohler Dickinson sink). There have been some threads recently about problems with fireclay apron front sinks, though many adore theirs. Fireclay and cast iron will be more expensive (the Dickinson sink runs $1600), though Ikea has the Domsjo sink reasonably priced. Congrats on getting your city approvals!! One giant hurdle out of the way!! I was thinking the same thing about deleting the corner pantry and doing tall cabinetry pantry space along the range wall, then move the range to the bottom wall. Then maybe put a counter with base cabinets below and wall cabs above in between the pantry & refrigerator and place the microwave there. In your current layout, I think the prep sink needs to be larger (unless you have a potfiller over the range) to accomodate filling pots and draining pots. It's a Loooooong way from the range to the main sink. I personally wouldn't do a prep sink smaller than 21" interior space (23" including lip for mounting). I also think the island should be centered so that it is equidistant from the sink wall and from the refrigerator wall. 36" is not enough and 39" is pushing it IMO. Consider too that the countertop will extend into that space as well by at least another inch on each side. So your 36-39" aisle just became 34-37". Will your range have double ovens or a single oven. If it will have double, can you just use the second oven for the warming drawer? Set the thermostat to 200 degrees and you're good to go. The money you save on the warming drawer can be a considerable amount that you may find you could use elsewhere. Plus, it frees up the island space for more storage. Hope this helps!

lynn: Your cherry office sounds wonderful. Are they built-in or freestanding? I can't wait to share pics!! I'm also wondering what to do for chairs since we have hardwood floors. It would work best to have chairs with castors so we can roll out of the way when we need to open the drawers, but am worried now I'll scratch the floors. rmkitchen: Ah, gentleman's closet, yes something like that. Who knows it'll have all our files, charging station, etc. DH wants it to go to the ceiling so my new idea is to do that and split the difference between ceiling and top of window molding (which is about 12") for the other cabinets. Would you mind posting a pic of your taller cabinets? I'm also wondering how it will work/feel with the huge upper doors (about 56"H)? Sort of like pantry doors sitting on top of a desk. I could td two stacked cabinets instead, but that will cost more, plus make the space less flexible to store larger items in adjustable shelves. Perhaps she could break up the look visually by making it look like one door is stacked on another. Does that make sense? I should probably go back through the FKB to see what the taller doors look like. Also with the taller cabinets, now the shorter base seems out of scale. Where it'd be really nice is for the two cabinets between the desks, but would be odd I think to do 2 different heights. I can't quite comprehend how these drawers eat up so much space with the glides, framing, etc. I'd at least like a drawer to store envelopes there. I can't quite get it as I have it in my freestanding desk--top pencil drawer, middle for envelopes, bottom of files--but it's a shorter base. I may have to loose the notion of a trash cabinet and just put under one of the desks--which I suppose there is room towards the back area. Anyway she'll come tomorrow and I think for the base, I'll see what she recommends will work best for the area where the cabinet butts up to the step and carry that look everwhere.

1) Does the dish drawer open towards the dishwasher? I like the idea of the work flow, but how will the island look having drawers/cabinets on adjacent sides? I'm having a hard time visualizing that. The dish drawer opens toward the DW--sorry, I usually use arrows, but forgot. The side of the cabinet facing the great room would have a panel. If the island is 8' wide, there would be enough space for three seats (24" per seat) along the back. Similar to these, but with drawers: 2) Is my kitchen really big enough for 2 sinks? How big is the typical prep sink? To be honest, I always thought they were luxury items. The size of the kitchen has less to do with it than the number of cooks, and layout of the appliances. A kitchen with an island is a perfect place for a prep sink--the cook/prepper can face the living areas while prepping (and if you have kids sitting at the island, face them, rather than facing a wall, with your back to the kids.) It also gives you extra spaces for prep, when your husband and kids can help, or room for helpers when you are entertaining. I'd suggest at least an 18" prep sink, although the one I drew looks more like 24". I have a second sink, and it's nice for someone else to be able to use it for prepping or hand-washing when the main sink is in use. I also use it to thaw and rinse meat, since it's smaller and easier to clean, and while my kitchen is not kosher, I like that raw meat doesn't get rinsed in the same sink I use for dishes and sippy cups. I usually post this link for newcomers, too, but forgot: New to Kitchens? Read me first. One other thing--I would not recommend putting a countertop MW on a shelf in an island. Think about bending over to set the timer, and then reaching in to remove the hot food. It might not be so bad for you, but your husband would be uncomfortable. If you don't want a MW on the counter, the only alternative to a MW drawer is one in an upper cabinet, and I like the windows on the back wall the way I drew them. It's more convenient to locate a MW near the fridge, but maybe it could go on a shelf above the DW, on the short wall, since dishes would be kept in the drawers in the island. I love granite too. Granite comes in a large variety of colours and patterns but not white. I’m not fond of manufactured quartz because I have a preference for natural stone. I did find a Quartzite that looks similar. I think I’ll think I’ll go with that. Thanks for your response!!

Read the threads on here first about Quartzite. They are scary. I initially thought I would buy quartzite because it was harder than granite. According to the threads, some so-called quartzite is not really quartzite (fabricators/distributors pulling a fast one or not knowing).

There are granites with white, but not exactly like your dolomite example.

I wonder what the test is for true courts eight? From what I understand all of these stones are mixtures of other stones and they are defined by their characteristics such as density etc. I wonder if shopping from a reputable dealer is the way to go? Does anyone know of any tests?

When considering a 'quartzite' bring a small square of glass tile to test the hardness. If it scratches, it's something else. If lemon juice causes any reaction, it's something else.Quartzite is harder than granite. This means a fabricator uses up more of his cutting and profiling tooling working it. This means it costs more to process.

Be totally involves with absolute approval requirement for templating and seaming. Let the fabricator know you will inspect the product before it leaves his shop.

Great advice thank you. And when I inspect it what exactly am I looking for clean edges? Or do the glass tile lemon juice test?
