Just opinion, but I think the rustic hickory is all wrong, a complete misfit for the house, which leans totally contemporary and as far from cabin, or farmhouse, or rustic anything as one can get .

Nor is the kitchen layout good, for this home or any other and no paint or flooring will fix that issue. If you love it, you buy it : ) I'd be ripping the kitchen.

I’d put walls up. Well, I’m kinda kidding. I just wouldn’t buy a house with a kitchen/family room that’s so open. Noise, smells, messes can’t hide. No thank you. That said, I love the hickory cabinets but don’t think they suit the home. The wall color is unappealing. You’d have to really love everything else to make this open space re-do thinkable.

IMO the hickory cabinets in no way work in that home . The home is not farmhouse , I am all for mixing really one style with anotehr but I think the cabinets are all wrong for the rest of the house

transitional of your two concepts will give you the most possibilities......skip the farmhouse .....

things will start to become more obvious once you get furnishings/ area rugs/ some window treatments...things you need anyway. . the space overall is the thing to keep in mind ..I dont think huge changes to the kitchen is what Id do right away. ..do you have furnishings? do you have table/chairs? do you have accesories? or are you just thinking of buying this property ???

as to the exact question? what to do? if anything...the island w the great drawers and a little concealment with the rise is better left as is in my opinion...the wall area might take a painting of the cabinets for not too much cost.......and the cabinets are not as great value with all base hinged doors....but if you like the hickory ??? is it worth it.... a smoother painted color I can see with the island left alone...

I dislike the cabinets against the floors because their colors are so similar. Just placing a wide runner at the sink would improve the appearance of the kitchen, with a warm color palette.

Forget farmhouse style, which would be completely at odds with style of your house. Here are some examples of kitchens with the similar wood finishes but with pale gray countertops.backsplash, nickel hardware, and warm wall paint throughout.

All those crazy angles and different wall heights would be tough for me - it would be better if everything was the same color (I’d have to remove the ”crown” on those lower walls) but there’s great natural light and if the neighborhood was amazing then I thinks its doable

Cook in that kitchen for at least a year. Then you’ll have a much better informed idea of what works for you and what you wish you had instead. As you make a plan to fix the function, you can address aesthetics as well. Most importantly, decide what YOU like. You’re the one who will be living with it.

Also, if you like the rustic hickory, keep it. It doesn't matter what anyone else likes or doesn't like, unless you're living with them (and so long as it isn't a health hazard).

Just a thought... Some nice area rugs might help!
