Help! My new installed window is leaking

We just had this window installed and it’s leaking from the top, and bad caulking. Doe it need new caulking or is it missing flashing?

I agree, all of the above. I would have them back and make sure they reinstall it properly, and maybe read about window installation yourself, so you know that its done right, this time. Thats a lot of water coming in that window.

I would certainly insist on replacing the drywall and insulation that got wet. But before that's replaced, be sure to see how your windows were installed. You might consider contacting your window manufacturer to see if they have a rep in your area who can check them out. My concern isn't so much for the windows but for the installation job. We went through >6 mos. of major inconvenience and expense all because the builder of our spec house thought he knew better than the window makers and didn't bother installing sill pans or correctly flashing the windows. Even after the builder paid to remove/replace brick, re-caulk (multiple times), etc., he whined about the window manufacturers insisting on needless (in his opinion) and costly installation procedures. Sadly, we know that the way this house was built is no different than most other houses in our area, whether they sell for $300K or $3MM. I went up against two other builders who insisted they'd "always" built houses using shockingly slipshod methods and thought that I was just difficult and picky for wanting to conform to building code (inspections are a joke here, so there's no comfort to be gained from a house passing inspection.) It's easier and cheaper to correct the problem now than after you're living in the house. Good luck!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Thank you again Joseph for all that information. Before I throw threats at the salesman could I get one more opinion.. So looks like they did use "Silicone Caulk like required from "Endura manufacturer's installation instructions". Spoke to salesman and he told us silicone takes longer to settle.. only when it gets lots of sun, he claimed the silicone caulk was not settled the 1st day it rained Well it rained again today and this time didn't see any water get inside. Does that mean everything is fixed? Still worried about the little light peaking out at center/bottom (by weatherstrip) of door and sides. etc He said wait 1 more week to see if we get any more leaks and if we do he would send someone from door manufacturer to take a look at it. What do you recommend we should do here? 1) Wait 1 week to see if we do get any more leaks, if not that means our doors are fixed? 2) Still tell the salesman to bring someone asap to fix all those open light spots or we will inform division of inspection of his delinquent license, etc

I still don't see how water on the inside sill could be caused by the stucco installation if flexible self-adhering flashing was properly installed over the nailing fins. Has that been eliminated as a cause yet? I am suspicious that self-adhering flashing might not be used in this location. IMO exposed sealant is little more than a gap filler in the long run since the sealant will eventually need to be removed and replaced. Such details are inappropriate for buildings that will not have on-going maintenance programs, budgets and building managers. There is a price to be paid for clean modern minimalist facades and the systems are changing so fast its difficult to understand how to install them. It wasn't so long ago when window manufacturers refused to provide installation advice but then they discovered they could use it to void warranties. I think they are by far the poorest source for that kind of information. If they knew how to build buildings they would design better windows.

Flashing would be to the exterior so show a picture from the outside. Caulk is not necessarily the answer as it is not the major line of defense, that would be the head flashing. My gut says the head flashing is missing since it is leaking at the top and the ceiling (?) appears pretty close to window head height, but impossible to tell from the picture. I agree on calling back the installer.

As the others have alluded to, its impossible to diagnose from these pics. Some shots from the exterior would be helpful.

Also as MWM mentioned, while caulking can stop leaks, its not the primary line of defense. Ideally, a properly flashed window or door will be leak-proof with no caulking at all. Depending on how it was installed that is not always the case, however it is best practice.

Pics from outside please. Likely coming from what is above the window here. This can happen when we remove a nailing flange equip window and go back with a retrofit. The reality is that the previous window was already leaking, but the nailing flange was helping conceal that issue.
