need honest opinion about backsplash
Comments (28)If you're big on midcentury modern, which these cabs invoke (because they're rather teak-like and the grain runs left-right, if I recall correctly) I'd suggest something that looks like hand-made rough ceramics (but NOT distinctly ethnic). Even if most of the tiles are smooth up to date rectangles or squares, a horizontal strip of something more earthy might work. Your challenge will be to merge whites with the browns. Or is the "white" more creamy? I also like the idea of some kind of herringbone to add an angle without going Moorish. If you could stand real rough stone (put stainless behind stove and use lots of sealer on the rest of the wall?), irregular narrow chunks of stone massed in the space, which is common look in tile store displays right now, might add distinction. Perhaps same color tone as your countertop but in rough stone?...See MoreOpinion about furniture from ikea?
Comments (20)I have used both IKEA and Young America furniture in my home and been happy with both, though not for any IKEA upholstered pieces. I have used Stanley Young America furniture in my children's rooms for years, it held up well, was very sturdy and when I wanted to change it out (for decor reasons) I was able to get a good resale price on CL for it. I phased in pieces over time and as my family needs changed. I started with a bunk bed for my then 2 young children (ages 5 and 3 I think; just sent DS off to college). Then when DS was around 8 and DD in her own room, I bought another set of Stanley YA furniture for DD and added a desk and hutch for my DS. I was happy they had the same style as the orig. bunk beds so I was able to get the desk/hutch in same style. Meanwhile I had another child, decided to break up the bunk beds into two separate rooms and bought a trundle to go below one of the beds. Again years later. Now DS is off at college, I plan to sell his desk/hutch on CL since I no longer have need for such a large study area and I fully expect to get a decent price for it as it has held up well. As for mixing and matching, when my DS got older he was drawn to the streamlined look of black furniture so I worked in an IKEA cube bookcase (which also held up well through his jr high-high school years, all the heavy text books, etc). It looked very good paired with the Stanley furniture so don't be afraid to mix and match to get the look you want. I liked the combo of the black and wood pieces in the same room for a boy. And while I'm going to be selling the desk, I'm keeping the IKEA bookcase. I can see my DS carting that off to an apt. in a year or so once he moves out of the dorms....See MoreNeed opinions about size of artwork
Comments (14)Badgergal's arrangement works because there are grounding elements for the artwork and an echoing symmetry. Your arrangement doesn't have that across the wall. You'll see that the horizontal pair of pictures relate to the pair of chairs and side table. The grouping of four relates to the console. Of course, you can always do what you want! You live there and your aesthetic won't be the same as another's. As long as you enjoy it, that is all that matters. But I think you are in a quandary because of trying to work with those two pieces in a way that causes an unbalance between the elements. I'm a huge fan of using what you have, but there are usually alternatives to furniture arrangement. There will be degrees between what works and what works well. If you absolutely do not want to move the cabinet (near the entry?) and give the chair a table to use for drink/remote/glasses, then I agree that a collage of framed art would be an option. Maybe something similar to this arrangement. See how low they take it? Use that idea and have the bottom of the arrangement a bit below the height of the chair arm. Your collection could be anything from paintings, prints, photos, or a variety of items that mean something to you. Placing one or two of the larger items over the cabinet will anchor it as it moves across the wall.
