Comments (26)Jojo - I am sure you are experimenting this week and I hope you find some successful foods. I will say, oatmeal is the first thing that gets either skipped for breakfast or modified a great deal when people first start wearing a glucose monitor. It is known for its sudden glucose spike. Accompany that with two pieces of toast and the sudden spike followed by a sharp fall could certainly have you feeling that way. I do best with fat, fiber and protein for breakfast, but sometimes I will have oatmeal. But only 1/3 cup mixed with 2 T chia seeds and some cinnamon and walnuts, along with breakfast chicken sausage for protein. I'm trying very hard to minimize my processed food, and it is so hard for me. I really do enjoy eating out and snacking. I need to cook more, but it takes so long :) And I can never figure out what to make. Today I thought I was doing well, but I still had a Papa Steve's Bar for breakfast and Masa chips with my avocado. Now, technically papa steve's has no junk and the Masa chips are made with beef tallow instead of seed oils, but they are still processed in some manner. I will keep trying to eat more whole foods! I am very good with fruit and nuts, so there's that :) I have been walking this week and got in several hours of pickleball and one strength training workout, so that part is going well. The podcast I listened to today said 20 minutes 3 times a week for strength training, and after that the returns start to diminish. I can do that - 20 minutes is nothing in my day. I am going to try harder to be more consistent with that....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/21/2024
Comments (19)I'm sorry that I've been largely absent from these posts for a while. I'm still doing 5:2 intermittent fasting and (mostly) daily exercise. After about a year of working really hard to lose weight I'd about hit my goal weight and was thrilled. I tried not to let myself become complacent and continued exercising and trying to moderate food intake and continue to use intermittent fasting as a tool. I have kept most of the weight off but not all of it. I will say it's been frustrating feeling like I'm still exercising and fasting at the levels I was when I was seeing 1-2lb weight decreases every week and yet still plateaued and ultimately started to see weight creep back up a bit. I've continued to battle that for the last few months. Feels like the story of my life that I have success, try to maintain, and then have to fight like h*** to keep it from coming back. And if I become even the least bit relaxed about it, the weight creeps up. Saw this interesting article today and it was enlightening on why this might be. https://www.cnn.com/2024/04/22/health/weight-loss-plateau-study-wellness/index.html The body regulates weight by trying to maintain an equilibrium between the calories we eat and the calories we burn. When we expend or cut calories, and start burning our stored energy, appetite kicks in to tell us to eat more. Hall’s studies have shown that the more weight a person loses, the stronger appetite becomes until it counteracts, and sometimes completely undoes, all the hard work they’ve done to lose in the first place. I thought it might be interesting to others who find themselves continuing to work hard and feel like their appetite is always fighting them....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/7/2024
Comments (20)Funky that's a bummer to delay your vacation, but I hope it ends up being much more relaxing this way. Last week was a mixed success from an exercise standpoint and this week is starting out the same. I didn't lift weights as much as I wanted last week, but added in an extra sunset hike with a bunch of ladies on Friday night. Saturday I pushed myself to an extra long swim. Unfortunately this seemed to be too much for me and I ended up being exhausted the rest of the day on Saturday. Utterly exhausted. I felt a little better on Sunday. I ended up skipping my workout Monday morning and I haven't done that in quite a while. I'm back on track as of yesterday with swimming, lifting, and running. Still doing intermittent fasting. Really pleased with success in dropping some winter / grief weight. I'm fitting into my smaller pant size again. I find fasting to be easier in the summer when I can find things to keep me busy, especially outside. I've been craving veggies but have also been feeling worn out and not enthused about cooking. I need to get back into the swing of things. I think I also need to get back to getting massages regularly. My massage therapist canceled an appointment last year and I never rescheduled after a crazy fall and winter. I'm have a lot of body aches and muscle pain lately. It can be challenging to fit in with a busy work schedule, but I really should see if I can make it happen. Hopefully she's still doing massage work....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/14/2024
Comments (18)I am still doing very well on the cardio exercise front with 4 days of swimming of 1 hour or more and 2 days of running and 1 hike. With my sister in law moving back to our city and connecting with one of her cousins, we've found a group of ladies that enjoys hiking and organized a few hikes. It's been really nice having someone again who is interested in being active and able to keep up with me again. I am, however, still struggling with exhaustion. I was so tired after my swim and my hike this weekend. I did talk to a swim coach who said that it's pretty common for people to get really sleepy after a hard swim. And that 50m (what I do in the summer) is hard on the body and it's also common to get exhausted and burned out doing 50m (instead of 25m) a lot. So maybe that's what's happening. On the weight lifting front I am really struggling. I am trying to lift 5 days a week but I'm not making that. Probably hitting 3 or maybe 4. But I've somehow re-aggrevated an elbow injury (tennis elbow maybe?) that is causing major issues when I try to lift. I have intense pain and weakness and simply cannot manage the weight on my left arm. Yesterday I had to decrease my weights when I found I couldn't do even 1-2 curls. I think I need to get back in to see my massage therapist and see if she can help. On the nutrition front I am still doing intermittent fasting and have been trying to push the longer fasts 2 days / week. It's not easy but I've been powering through. I also talked with an athletic friend about recovery supplements and he suggested some amino acid supplements so I'm trying those. Not sure if they'll help or not, but I figured it was worth a try. I am also trying to get back to taking my digestive supplements, which I've been slacking on. I haven't been cooking as much as I probably should. But I have been trying to keep lots of fresh fruit around for when I want to snack. I am still waiting for my garden to really produce. I've had a few cherry tomatoes, two cucumbers, and one yellow squash. I probably underwatered through June. Oh well. So impressed with those recovering from injuries and surgeries. You are an inspiration. I love reading your progress every week. Funky, your weight loss progress is so inspiring. Wow....See MoreRelated Professionals
