preparing for squash this season

Last season I sowed a variety of squashes in an area: kabocha, yellow crookneck, zucchini, and gourds. The result was a crop of huge bumpy squashes that were clearly crosses. I got nothing identifiable or edible. This confused me as I thought crosses would show up the following year, not the same season. I need a lesson in botany. And advice about how to plant squash in this area next year, if at all. Thank you!
