faux mirror window in kitchen

Looking for recommendations on what to do with this faux mirror that’s located above our sink in our kitchen. We are renovating the entire kitchen and not sure if I should leave it or fill it in.

Take it out it fools no one but we do need to see the space . Take pics of all 4 walls and post here in comments DO NOT start another post. We also need info as to what exactly you are changing

oh boxie, I am already thinking of how much I'm going to like it. I most likely will not have a wood valance, and no swag- but my husband will frame it so I do have a ledge (topped with soapstone) to place a candle on or maybe an orchid. I think instead of a valance I will hang a nice plaque with something special written on it. Darn. It looks like I will have to go shopping. What a pity. ;)

By using off white blinds -- vinyl or faux wood to withstand the moisture of the kitchen -- the same as or similar to the color as your cabinets, the blinds will all but disappear visually, enabling the emphasis to be on the light entering the room there rather than the window treatment. Adding blinds or shades of any other color tends to emphasis the small size of the average kitchen window. If you are looking out your window at the window of your neighbor, you might consider adding a either a pair of posts w/lattice in between -- or three posts to create a free standing angle w/triangle planter as their weighted base. https://www.amazon.com/5-5-Foot-Outdoor-Triangle-Planter-Trellis/dp/B01CSCQ0TM/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_86_img_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MVP5MKNZ7CYXTHPX96AC Alternately, you might consider a rectangular treated wood planter box w/lattice: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/78461218487502661/?lp=true It helps if you can find a pair of 4' plastic rectangle shaped planters and then build your box around them with your lattice over the box and in between the planters rather than need to line the wood box w/thick plastic. Adding either treated wood feet or even wheels to your planter will make it more mobile. Depending upon your planting zone, something like English Ivy in your planters could soon provide year round privacy. English Ivy is invasive so you might not want to plant it directly into the soil of your yard.

Bummer loosing the window in the kitchen. A window frame with mirrors gives the illusion of a window. You will have a reflection of you when washing dishes, so smile :) Found this photo of art behind a window frame. How about a recessed lit area behind then stain glass behind sink. This is an actual window, but with a mirror within the recess with led lighting around the whole square could be a beautiful accent. or keep as a pass thru & install stain glass Or the common one, Instead of a backlit window, glass cabinets with lights within & under cabinet lighting. That will add storage as well. Clear glass for displaying decorative items or frosted to hide more within. Note: Having any glass or mirror will need more cleaning due to hot water steam. So open shelving, but that too would need to be dusted. Depending on the addition, a pass thru may be an option. Kitchen pass thru with frosted glass doors With some creativity & a good finishing contractor, the sink area can end up being just as beautiful of a focal point. That's not a fake window - it's an attic window. We have one as well, and I can't imagine the house without it. Because the attic is always dark (other than sunshine of course), you never see framing members or anything like that. Ours is on the front of the house above the 2nd story, so it's rather high - similar to your rear elevation. That probably helps in the inability-to-see-through-it department. If you end up seeing framing through the front window, just ask your builder to hang a piece of plywood or something a couple of feet inside the window and paint it black. It'll disappear and I like that idea better than painting the glass black - seems like that would create a mirror effect. Just be sure to use the same style of window as the rest of the house. It needs to match and clearly be a real window. When I think of a fake window, I think of something like this where either a blank is used, or shutters are there to fake like there's a window behind them - IMO that's almost always a bad idea:

I would not want to include that picture mirror in your kitchen renovation. Can you find another place for the mirror.

I've used mirror backsplash to bright dark kitchens and it looks great. I think that because yours has the little window panes that it doesn't work. You've lived there a while... do you like seeing behind you while you're at the sink? I placed a mirror in front of me while at my desk for the line of sight and a view out a window. Staring at a blank wall is not fun.

So far we raised our sunken in living room. Knocked down a non load bearing wall. Got all the electrical done by an electrician. We are going to have an 10x5 feet island with a stove. Sink and dishwasher will remain. All new cabinets are coming and new painted walls (creamy white -shoji) .

Another vote to remove it. Looks very faux. Get a nice tile backsplash there that will be current and part of the whole reno look.

It looks like an interior room behind it? I assume a room where an open pass through wouldn't be OK. But if it's built into the wall, you could pull the mirror and make the niche something else- a light panel, slender sheving for display, other decorative action. The sill part as a place for your dish stuff. If you got enough depth, an herb garden with LED lighting. Since you say cabinets are coming, I'm going to guess you probably didn't order one for that spot.

Put the stove where the sink is currently so it can be properly vented and put the sink on the island.

Pretty clever looking faux window, however, I would remove it. Finish you kitchen with that area blank. Live in it for a while, then see what it needs. You can always hang a mirror with a nice frame if .you miss the mirror. What is the other room behind the wall? What about a cut out in the wall with a plant hanging in it?

@hallet & co. We were planning to do that but I changed my mind. We have kids and I would love to face them while cooking to watch them or when they are sitting at the island.
