Roman shades? Curtains?

We bought a house last May and after months of replacing floors etc. We are now trying to figure out how to put it together. I was planning on putting curtains up in the front formal sitting/living room and take down the blinds.

I have talked to two people at the pottery barn. (one in store and one online) and both think it is going to be too heavy to put two 100 inch wide (96 long) blackout panels (linen blackout) on this window. There are no studs in the center. So we would use two drywall anchors in the center.

My husband is handy and thinks he can do it. But now I am wondering. Any advice? Any alternatives? The blinds we have are painted white wood blinds, good quality

How often do you think you will want to close the blinds all of the way and what is the need for blackout?

Lovely room, and you do not need black out curtains unless you make hubby sleep on the couch. I would do panels in a neutral color with a hint of the same red that is in the rug. If you feel exposed from the front, you can do sheers between the panels. You don’t need heavy drapes, but with a window of that width, we usually use drywall anchors which is no big deal.

We have a similar look...with one more window on top in the middle. We did not put anything on top, but had them framed out with brown oak. The other windows have brown blinds. We keep them up, mostly so we had all the windows tinted by a professional. In fact, if you get a lot of sun, I suggest you do that on all the windows. It is a bit pricey but will protect you, the furniture and floors from the UV rays which will damage everything. Good Luck!

Because you have a limited space between your windows and the fireplace, curtains would be really tight. I think Roman shades would be less busy, visually, and take up less space. Roman shades come in rounded, flat, and traditional so you have a lot of choices.

If you want you can do a Roman blind on the lower window and a Roman blind with drapery on the taller window.

I want to be able to close them completely every single day.

I like the look of blackout blinds, I like the way they hang compared to ones with minimal or no lining.

I did Hunter Douglas Vignettes with lined drapery panels on a similar window, The Vignettes are LiftRise but you can also get them remote. The drapery panels were custom made. Pinch Pleats on rings. I close the Vignette everyday, but the panels are stationary.

Can you not just close the blinds completely every day? Why does it have to be the curtains? Is it a light issue or a privacy issue?

Pianos are not supposed to be put on exterior walls.

If the draperies are expertly made they should hang properly without needed a heavy lining. The experts use weights in the bottom hem.

I suggest a light drapery the color of the wall if you want to dress that window.

I like shades or blinds with curtains. You could also use sheers under the curtains.

Curtain panels please but think about the visual weight you are considering. Your room is very airy and minimal. Don't weigh the room down with too heavy curtains. DH will figure out the hardware. You have plenty of room above the window frames.

If light and heat control is the issue for that window do solar dhades for that the bonus you get to keep the view and have daytime privacy then just nice linen drapes for night time privacy I see no reason for blackouts in this space .

Love what Beverly showed. Perfect and really adds to the room.

I’ve had curtains in a similar window set-up as yours, had no problem mounting the rods without studs.

I’d go with roman blinds and curtains on the sides if you want drapes.
