last minute help on kitchen layout
Comments (31)Yes, slab has been poured and the exterior walls blocked. They would have to jackhammer through the slab to lay the electric conduit. I don't think I should challenge them on the cost, even if it could be done cheaper. It's no good completing the build with negative feelings on both sides. I just don't have the talent to see a space and imagine how it could be. We could only afford a few house plans, and this was the best one that had other elements we really wanted. When I found Garden Web I decided to post, since the kitchen layout concerned me but I didn't know how it could be improved. Of course, I found this site too late, for the island anyway. Some minor changes can still be made with the peninsula, keeping in mind sink placement needs to stay nearly the same. Maybe it is not that bad as is? I have a hard time imagining myself utilizing a space that is still a drawing on paper. I do want to say thank you GG and Lena for all your help. I am still open to suggestions as we haven't framed or chosen cabinets yet....See MoreLast minute kitchen layout help needed
Comments (4)I'm not one of the gurus, but I think it's fine. You would probably prep on the island space opposite of the stove. You'd be close enough to the sink, and other people could access the sink and DW if you were prepping without getting in your way. They can also get to the fridge without crossing your path. One thing I would do. Make both sides of the stove drawers. Get rid of the spice pullouts altogether and combine it to have 2 30" drawer stacks - one on either side. That will give you plenty of space for pots and pans. And you can use the top drawer of one side for your spices - better for them as they aren't supposed to be next to the range b/c heat is not good for them. Then you have the pretty picture of symmetry and the convenience/function of drawers....See MoreLast minute thoughts on this layout please...
Comments (18)Wow, how nice to come home from work to so many great responses! rhome, victoria, egg...thanks for the line drawing rhome to explain the pantry. Having never really seen one, I am hoping it will be as good as I think! bmore...love the pocket door idea, I had not even thought of that, I will ask about that tomorrow. That will really help the tight space. homepro...you are right you do not see a large area to spread out in, its just not a large enough space. It is a lot more than I have used in the last 20 years and I think it is placed well for my use. I am feeling pretty confident that the pantry will be extremely useful to hold lots of things that my cabinets fall short on holding. I wish I had room for long areas of countertop too. pepper...wow, thanks so much for letting me see it! I think it looks like a pretty nice, although compact, work area. Thanks for your time on that! buehl...thank you so much, that is the way I feel about it all exactly. The island will be one level and I think if I have helpers there will be plenty of room around for them to work too. All of this help is invaluable...as all who have come before me, this place has been so important this last year...thank you! Demo pics to follow soon! Yuk,,, vic...See MoreLast minute design help!
Comments (40)Hi all, just a quick update on things. Based on your feedback we have decided to go back to the architect and see what could be done by turning this into a 2 story house rather than rancher. This would (in our thinking) be done by moving all 4 kids bedrooms + bathroom upstairs and relocating the master bed/bath/wic to the top left of the house where bed 5 and 6 currently are. The office would likely go to the south of the house near where bed 3 is at. Perhaps a toilet would be located near here as well. We will of course share the draft they come back with, but if you have any thoughts or other suggestions as to the best way to proceed with this exercise we would love to hear them. At the end of the day, your advice (while hard to hear sometimes) is what we want and need to hear. For example, if we move all kids bedrooms to the top with stairs located near the main entrance, that will bring many things closer together (laundry being one of them). Are there other issues with the way we are thinking of proceeding that you can see? With our view primary to the north and east, we have wondered whether having the kitchen sandwiched in like that may be the best idea - thoughts?...See MoreRelated Professionals
