I’m not a decorator but what the room shows me is, well, nothing. Tells us nothing about you, about who lives in the house. Do you have anything somewhere around the house, furniture, colors, art, accents, memoribilia, that you can bring in to tell your story? Maybe not too private, but things you are interested in, places you have been?

So many rooms like yours here in the Design Dilemmas. The room is drowning in a sea of gray. There's no spark to it, no life, no color.

I'd get a new rug, something with a pretty color and pattern, to drive the palette. If you want to keep the upholstery, at least get some colorful pillows and throws. Replace the neutral lamps with colorful ceramic ones. You could also spice up the space with new curtains.

Look at those gorgeous gold velvet chairs that elcieg posted. They just light up the space. Don't be afraid to use color!

This will be a slower process after Christmas $$$$$ have dwindled

Just reposition the rug. A felt pad isn't expensive. Put the sofa pillows on the chairs, and the throw (which is on the chair which will to go away), on the sofa. Add some greenery on the table between the two new chairs.

Don't spend any money until you have a stash. Lots can be done in your room. Don't band aid.

The 2 armchairs near the window seem to make the sofa look crowded in the corner. Perhaps you can try the layout below. The 2 light coloured armchairs would also be a break from the dark dining room furniture. It's nice to have black in the room but sometimes less is more... For instance, I suggest a much thinner frame for your art above the sofa, and a white shade on your black lamp, accent pillows placed as suggested with a mix of light & dark, a black & white lumbar pillow on your leather chair & fold the throw and place on the arm with a black floor reading lamp next it. No runner on your black console and a set of 4 black framed prints above with a wide white matte would brighten that wall. A round glass coffee table with black metal legs would wouldn't look as heavy as the one you presently have. The rest is simply completing with decor as shown below. A nice live indoor plant or tree in the corner in a wicker basket would complete the look

Do not waste money on a chair that was not good quality to begin . Bonded leather was awful and certainly not used on good pieces . I would not bother with a replace,ment i rarely like odd number of chairs and I think you will have a nice space with one less chair . it might be nice to get one pillow with that red from the srt in it somehwere.. I think the rounf coffee table is not very useable with the sofa so maybe a rectangular one in front of the sofa would be better . Maybe a nice cenrerpiece for the dining table with that red somewhere in it too.

I did wonder about being too crowded- the decorator from furniture store came in and said fine- sometimes I need to go with my gut

Here's what the dining side would look like, you still have a nice view of your living room while enjoying your morning coffee in your armchairs. Again, a few minor decor adjustments in your dining room including a larger plant on a stand in your bay window, and an assortment of white vases on your table...

It doesn't cost anything to to switch the chairs around and see how you feel about it, you might be surprised by the result!

I guess I must of skipped the part where you said you were getting rid of the tan bonded leather chair, they don't stay looking nice for a very long time.

How about this olive green fabric wing-back chair from Crate & Barrel? That green works very well with the beige - grey - black - of your colour scheme.

Would you consider using the color spark of rose or fuchsia in the artwork for new pillow covers, a throw, and a live orchid? JoAnn's has a lot on sale in January. For your table, a colorful faux floral arrangement can be a good picker upper in the winter months and replaced by live flowers in the spring.

This time of the year our homes often feel a bit blah after colorful holiday decor comes down. It's also a good time to try something new. Your room is basically very nice though you don't really have a good walkway through the space. Since you're getting rid of the covered leather chair, here are some experimental layouts to try to see if the room feels better to you. If you want to experiment with layout, get felt gliders for under all the furniture so you can easily move pieces around.

--Move armchairs to face each other across the coffee table. This will create some airiness at the window end of the room where you could add some beautiful live plants, which always makes a room feel more interesting and alive.

--Or: Pull two armchairs closer to coffee table and float the sofa to face window. Then move your piece that's currently across from sofa to sofa wall and put the big art work over that. This would create a walkway to your dining area and define the living room area as a conversational group.

--Or: put your sofa under the window and float both armchairs to face the sofa and window. Then move your piece that's currently across from sofa to sofa wall and put the big art work over that. Again, this creates a passageway from front door through the space.

For coziness and friendliness, think more about comfort in a room. Can people walk through without brushing against pieces of furniture? Is the coffee table or side table reachable to put down a cup, a book, a phone. Does the lighting create a cozy, yet functional feeling? Here are ideal living room measurements:

Blue and pink were not the right colors to add to an ivory, tan, beige, or taupe room. They don't work together just like the pink art doesn't work above your sofa.

How does the front look?

My armchairs are 29” wide and my sofa is 40” deep
Tried the chairs with backs to the dining room, but there is only a very small area to get from the living room to the dining room- and that’s if I get rid of the sofa table against the wall opposite the sofa

I have moved the pillows to the front arm chairs, as well as the throws( I like that look but black pillows are almost too thick - would need to take off if sitting there)- maybe a lumbar pillow or throw over back?

Considering the width of your living room and the size of your furniture, you don't really have any other option than to leave the 2 armchairs in front of the window. I like the sofa table where it it and it allows for some decor (suggested previously).

You can place 2 square ottomans (21" H - good height to sit if you need extra seating) between the living room and the dining room.

I stayed with the green which I find looks nice with your furniture. However, before recovering or buying new accent pillows (they should have feather inserts for a nice look), I suggest you find the new artwork and coordinate you decor with it.

I noticed that your area rug doesn't seem to reach under all seating in the room. The armchairs should sit properly on it, they barely seem to touch but I don't think you can bring them forward. Perhaps you can move your rug slightly or just leave the 2 chairs away from the rug.

As to the 2 gold mirrors you have, without seeing what they are I cannot unfortunately give an opinion.

Per suggestion above, we just moved the rug yesterday to be centre of sofa. It was stated that chairs would not be on it and that that was fine.

Although the mirrors look nice, sometimes less is more. They seem to be the type of mirrors that you can put up as a grouping not separate them. Have fun shopping for your new painting, the choice of the subject is something very personal, a thin black frame would look nice for a painting or perhaps a print with a white matte also with a thin frame.

The length of the frame should be about 2/3 the length of the sofa and be hung and no more than 8 to 10 inches above the back of the sofa.

Do you have a leaf for your table? If so, maybe increase the length of your table so chairs around it aren’t so crowded. Then remove the small table at the end of the dining table. And I would remove everything on the top of your hutch.

Sharon, your LR and DR have great bones with neutral furniture. Colorful art and pillows could really help add some personality. I keep picturing a large piece of art in your DR on the back wall in place of the hutch. This is a crazy thought you may not like but I wonder about swapping the locations of the DR hutch and the LR console. The console could act as a buffet and you could put a large piece of art over it. The hutch in the LR could display a few treasured items but kept very simple. A large piece of art on that back DR wall would add some life to the space. Just a thought.

I have had that swap -I think I did this because the hutch was taking up a wall where I needed light and an extra chair was right in the way of the hutch

Another crazy idea for furniture placement. Move the white chair on the couch wall to the location of brown chair. Put the hutch on the wall where that chair used to be (to the left of the couch). Move console to DR. The wood demilune table you had in the DR could be put on the wall where the console used to be Floor lamp could be moved to new chair location. Table lamp moved to end table near chair by window. This would mean removing brown chair which I think you had mentioned earlier?

Personally, I would wallpaper the dining room wall, to give the whole room some punch, then add pillows and art in the colors from your wallpaper to bring it al together.

I would not do the jut out, since you are centering your cabinet on the flat wall. You can Google wallpaper visualizer and take a look at wallpaper would look like in your room.
