I love moody spaces also! There are so many possibilities. One thought is to paint above and below the ledge both the same dark color, add a large piece of art to both sections, and an eye-catching chandelier. Will the stairs be lvp? Besides black, what other moody colors are you considering?

One option you might consider is painting the stairs and then adding a runner instead of carpet that goes wall to wall. Can you link the carpet you are thinking of?

Here is my vision of your stairway as best I could do with photo you posted. There are continuous runners out that would be a low(er) cost option like the one I posted below. Stairs are tricky to do so keep that in mind. I would paint the stairs SW iron Ore in a “satin” finish then do runner as wide as you can. Paint “ledge wall” ALL SW Iron Ore. add semi flush Sputnik light fixture for fun look. Add iron simple (but to code) railing open look to opening. Paint your stairway railing SW Iron Ore but in “satin” finish for more durable surface. Then add art in abstract in space above the ledge. Noting on the ledge. (Especially sports bobble heads!). lol.

I would find the carpet runner first, then see if Iron Ore works with it. There are more paint options than runners-you-like options.

Depending on the size of your staircase, you may find individual runners online that you can strategically staple onto the steps where no one will see where one ends and the next one begins.

I did what @RedRyder is suggesting several years ago except I was starting with horrible wall to wall carpet that I absolutely hated. I removed the carpet, painted the wood underneath black along with the trim, and added a runner I found on Amazon. Actually it took several runners. I also used a carpet pad and a few other supplies but it was a very easy diy. On a scale of difficulty, I would rate it about 2/5. If you go this route, watch a few YouTube videos before you start. The runner I used has a scattered pattern. I had to figure out how to match the pattern edges around the pie shaped steps. Other than that it was a simple project. I added a dark eggplant colored accent wall. I was looking for dark, moody, dramatic, and cheap. I accomplished all of that.
