Walkway around my island -- enough or too much?
Comments (4)You won't be a one-cook family for long! Children grow very quickly! But, yes, I think those aisles are fine. What about your island? Is it one or two levels (one is much more useful & two will not hide a mess...)? Seating overhang (15" for counter-height & 12" for bar-height)? Some may think it's overkill b/w island & range wall, but since you have all three major zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) sharing floor space in that aisle, I think the 4' is a good size. This aisle will be the one used the most while working in the kitchen...the refrigerator counter & aisle probably won't be used much for "regular" prepping & cooking since the counter is too far from the range or a source of water. It might work as a Baking Center, though. (Could you make the counter a little deeper to give you more room for rolling out dough, etc.?) As to the refrigerator aisle, it will be a major entry into the kitchen b/c of the locations of the Great Room and refrigerator, so that aisle should be as wide as possible as well...48" might be better than the 42" you have now. Behind the island seats....since there's no wall there and presumably people can veer over into the Great Room to get by, that space is fine as well. You appear to have a Study as well as an office...do you really need both? If that small office off the kitchen is for the kids, I would start thinking now about how you're going to keep an eye on them when they're on the computer. That area is so closed off and they can close the door on you! You might consider ending the kitchen wall just beyond the last cabinet and taking down the walls to open that office up to the Kitchen & Breakfast Room...that way it's open enough to be able to check on children or for you to go back & forth if you need to use the computer while you're in the kitchen. It will also be less claustrophobic in the tiny room (it's a good size for a pantry, but it's pretty small for an office!) You know, if you can put up shelving on the side wall of the closet, it would be a great place for cookbooks... Something like this:...See MoreKitchen Island help - is clearance too small?
Comments (31)This is my personal opinion - I think it would be awful - its likely to feel way more cramped than your existing layout. The dishwasher, range and refrigerator doors can hit each other. In your drawing, you show the proper depth for a counterdepth ref, but ranges are 27" - 28" deep and their doors generally need to stay in front of the cabinet line - you ain't countersinking it into the island - it would void your warranty right there - aside from driving a blding inspector insane. So - you know that 30" aisle - it goes down to about 22" right in front of the ref and range. Do you know how far out a cabinet drawer comes these days? 21-23" depending the mfg - not including the handles. Do you know how big a tall tub dishwasher door is? 28" How far a range door sticks out? From 16" to 21" from the already extended depth. How much front clearance does the freezer door/drawer need? How the heck will you get the ref or range into place? Or take them out for service or replacement. Plus, now you have the chance to knock pots off the range if you make even a small mistake on the other side of the island. Plus, plus YOU END UP WITH LESS PREP SPACE because you moved the ref and the range. Personally, I would put the sink/ref/dish storage/micro on one side wall and the range on the other. I would shorten and narrow the existing island (maybe 30 x 51 finished counter) to allow for better clearances, but also better access from one side to the other. I would think about pushing it all the way over to the window (more like an ungrounded peninsula)....See MoreNeed Suggestions for my Blank Kitchen Wall
Comments (25)I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but you do not have room for anything behind the island seats - except wall art or a chalkboard or similar. Even going into the studs will be iffy - if anyone needs to get something from it and there's someone sitting at the island it will be an issue. The minimum distance behind seating if there is nothing behind the seats except a wall and only light traffic is 44" - and that's the distance b/w the counter and the wall, not b/w seats. When you start adding cabinets, etc., even shallow ones, you now need at least 54" - and you won't have anywhere near that much. Add to it that it's a busy aisle, and you will need 60". Even with nothing behind the seats but a busy aisle, 48" is pushing it (should be 54" with a busy aisle & nothing behind the seats). If you put something b/w the studs, just make sure it's not something that people will need to get to very often - then you will probably be OK. Yes, in the infrequent times someone needs to get to whatever is stored in the wall, people will just have to deal with it. It's not something I would expect people to have to deal with frequently, though. Good luck!...See MoreAisle width around island-keep pantry cabinets or widen aisles?
Comments (5)Ok, so I was trying to keep the whole thing open to the rest of the space (the breakfast area and living are the rest of the space going back from the kitchen, so adding a peninsula was something I was trying to avoid and get seating at the island. I think all of you basically answered my question that the clearances are not going to work and if this is the basic layout, the pantry cabinets will have to go. The 48" range has already been chucked out in favor of a cooktop, I just don't have an updated visual. That is the reason for adding double ovens somewhere. Thanks, everyone!...See MoreRelated Professionals
