Paint Kitchens Design Dilemma

Painting Cabinets/Island

I’m repainting my cabinets (they’re 15 years old and the paint is worn) and island. Keeping the gray countertops. Want to do something more modern and less farmhouse. Ideas on colors for the island and cabinet? Would love to not do white. Also - suggestions on more modern cabinet pulls?

Thank you! Unfortunately the wood on the island has water marks. It definitely needs to be painted too.

If you're going to have a professional do the painting they may have a way to restore the finish on the island. It's worth a try because I agree with AB Normal. Green with a wood island would be a nice look. If that doesn't work out then look for a gray that complements the countertop, or do everything green. There are multiple shades of green to choose from.

In that case I'd paint the island to match the other cabinets. Your counter will read black--do you really want a big black box in the middle of a light colored kitchen? If you add lighting over the island, it could be wrought iron and that would give you another touch of black. I think that's all you need. Travertine tile with speckled granite is too much sameness of pattern and isn't a combo used much anymore. I think you'll want to match tile to your cabinets rather than your counter. Maybe a handglazed ceramic to give some variation between tiles and to update it. This is the only photo I have of cream tile with variation. You could still add the ORB decos.

so you want to paint the entire island in the sage? or just the back/side portion and leaving the doors/front part white? sorry, but that's going to look horrible. if you want to paint the island, then paint the entire thing. How does sage work into your colors? lets see an overall picture of the kitchen/living area BTW, you have very modern stools w/a rather traditional countertop, cabinet and flooring. I'd suggest you replace those w/something that is better suited for the style. and this gray/blue shade works better w/the granite or this darker gray

The cabinets look fine, just the way they are. Spend your money removing the popcorn ceiling, that doesnt even look clean, and removing all that wallpaper and then repaint the kitchen, a nice color that goes with everything in the room.

I wouldnt paint your cabinets at all. They appear to be in good condition. If you still feel the need to paint them, then pick a different color. Either a tan color or a cream color. Both will go with your counters and floors . White will be a stark look in your kitchen. Personally, I would leave them alone, and remove a bit of the clutter from the counters, and add some accessories that will brighten up your kitchen, and make it more appealing. I see a wall, through the doorway, that appears to be a shade of aqua or turquoise? If that is really the color, I see on my monitor, I would add some turquoise accessories like a mixer, etc., and also a nice runner in the same color in front of the sink. A plant or two, or a vase of flowers, would also look nice. Anything to brighten it up, instead of blah. Above that desk, there is a large expanse of nothing on the walls. Some really nice art work, would add a whole lot to the room. Match your new accessories for the colors.

If the dose of yellow at the seating and wall areas is something you like i might work w blue for cabs . Your space is large and bright and a dose of warm metal hardware could liven it up /along w other details...just depends on the effort you want to put into this. Bring in paint cards and start looking at inspiration pics. Two finishes?? vs. All bathed in one beautiful color?? You have to edge closer to

some sort of vision. Personally I might change the yellow paint color before anything...but anyway.....

I would paint the cabinets and island a nice light blue or a deeper shade of blue or sage green or even celery. Will look really nice.

Re do the perimeter in white, pick a color that is in your decor in the living or family room for the island. The only "farmhouse" elements in the kitchen are the pendants and stools !

The white is nice with the counters.......now what else? : )

You are bored with white after only 15 years? A color will wear on you even faster. Lightly sand your island apply stain then re-poly. Who painted your cabinetry initially? It should last longer than 15 years. Swap out the hardware/pendants and stools. Call it good.

I aslo want to know who painted them the last time? Have you ever painted cabinets before ? They need to be sprayed not painted in the kitchen They need proper prep which will take hours of work. They need the right paint . If you have never done even a small cabinet I would STIOP right now and hire an actaul cabinet refinisher . I do not see much farmhouse except for the lighting not even the stools say farmhouse to me. I think maybe you are just tired of what you have and to DIY those cabinets IMO will be a big mistake . Cange the lighting make suare all the bulbs are LED 4000K that will instantly change the look . The walls a different color too. All those cheap to do and all before painting the cabinets for sure. Some simple stainless bar pulls with no arch too
