Can you replace a drop-in sink with an undermount sink (granite)?
Comments (3)Yes, I understand that the edges of the granite would need to be done. But I think that is a relatively minor issue. From what I've googled, it seems that the cutout for a drop-in sink is usually larger than for an undermount sink, so it is/may not be possible to put in an undermount sink if you already have a drop-in sink. I'm trying to figure out if/how I can figure out how big my cutout is in the granite for the drop-in sink without removing the sink. Then I might be able to figure out whether the cutout is too big for my new sink. The other thought I had was if the counter is already in place, how do you get the undermount sink in place? It would have to go through the cabinet, right? My cabinets have a wood piece (?frame) running between the double doors, so I'm pretty sure the sink wouldn't fit in that way. I think I'm answering my own question, but I'm hoping that there is a way that's not too complicated to accomplish this....See MoreReplacing undermount sink, doable?
Comments (1)Sink base size determines sink size. Then the skill of a specialty fabricator can make that change happen. It will generally cost you 1/2-2/3 of just buying an all new counter. If you can find someone local with the skill. It is not a common specialty....See MoreIs it possible to replace undermount sink?
Comments (9)"joe; just out of curiosity; how long does it take you to remove an existing, cut and polish a new cutout, and install a new sink? Also, do you do it alone or with a helper?" It depends on the sink, the age of the home, and how the plumbing Gods smile upon me or not. I've installed Elkay Quartz Luxe apron front sinks in 4 1/2 hours, but then there's only three sides to cut and polish. Sometimes there are clip slots to fill and rods to grind back. Sometimes there are none of those. I usually work alone, but I'm hoping the Covid will help me find someone. Until they're experienced enough to work alone, 20 jobs or so, a helper doesn't even pay for himself. I've mounted several cast iron undermounts alone. Today's job took 8 or so, but I kinda got screwed on my plumbing: If you get your first 10 apron sinks installed in 10 hours each, you're killin' it....See MoreUnder-mount kitchen sink
Comments (3)They're using Black Mamba or similar. I've never used it because I don't know how thin the bead can be, whether or not it will look good with a slight positive sink reveal, and reverseability. I finally had a warranty call on a composite sink today. We released the straps, dropped the sink, cleaned the silicone off the flange and stone bottom, replaced the sink, and were done in several hours, plumbing included. I don't know if that would happen with a polymer sealant sink. Epoxied sinks can be a disaster....See MoreRelated Professionals
