Does Dieffenbachia need pruning?

I have a small pot containing a Dieffenbachia of some variety, acquired as a gift about a year ago.

It has flourished quite well after repotting it using Al's 5-1-1 bark mix.

I noticed it has sent up many new shoots from the base. I have never grown this type of plant before.

Do I just leave it and eventually up pot it into a larger container after a while?

Can I cut off several of the shoots/canes level with the media and just let 1, 2 or 3 canes dominate?

Are the canes a showy part of the plant that need leaves removed to display the canes?
