Gas water heater and extended absence

Because of the experience of friends who have had plumbing leaks that resulted in significant damage, I always turn off the water supply into the house before being away for longer than overnight. But I've never turned off the gas water heater.

We're going to be away from home for several weeks and but the water heater doesn't have any sort of "vacation mode" setting. So I'm assuming the only thing I can do is turn off the pilot and gas supply (in case there is a leak somewhere and the tank were to empty as a result). But is there a better approach to this?
