Comments (31)I got LOS last spring. Its a grafted plant. It didnt bloom much last year. She grew a lot though. This spring I espaliered her on a piece of wire fencing strung between a few metal t-posts to try and get her canes more horizontal. That did the trick because she has been blooming in regular flushes this year. She is much larger now that in the spring when I took these photos. She is in mostly full sun and in a black plastic nursery pot still lol. She likes it that way!! There is a tree that casts shade on the far side one end of the plant, really late in the day about 4pm (left side of the photo). The majority of the plant (about 3/4th of it, including its pot, gets full sun All day....See MoreLady of shallot
Comments (9)I started with three and then added more to form a hedge. It's at the edge of my front lawn by the road where it gets pelted by snowplows all winter; she's one tough lady. Anyhow the original 3 are mature, they have remained just under 5'. The canes can get longer but they are sturdy, they bend and form a fountain shape. Also she responds very well to pruning. Some varieties with long canes tend to blossom just at the end of the canes, so you sacrifice bloom when you try to curtail tall growth. Instead, LoS responds to pruning by sending out laterals, hence more bloom....See MoreLady of Shallot disappointing in my garden
Comments (37)Ben - I agree about Lady Emma H. I bought 2 because I heard they were slow starters. Mine are several years old, 1 strong 1 weak -planted together as one plant. They give very pretty if not spectacular blooms year round. Descent smells. Bit it is their wonderful bronze foliage and ability to stay at less than 3’ makes them one of my favorites for front row roses. Kathy - Austins seem to be a love ‘em or hate ‘em rose in super hot climates. The right ones are great but like they say you might have to kiss a lot of frogs... when you do get to kiss the prince they are sooo rewarding. When you see them in England at the Austin garden you see how far away most of our hot climate versions are from the perfection of bush & blooms they consistently achieve in their home. Lota - NY and Texas heat are oh so so different. But good for you I am jealous you achieved what I tried to grow. very beautiful. Sylvia and mustbnuts -does FDancer perform in part shade?
