how high are ceilings? Ours is open concept with 9” ceilings. Used can lights throughout with directional lights pointing toward fireplace, fixture over dining table, pendants over island, and fixture in stairwell to basement ( large window there). We just use the recessed lights and lamps in living room. If ceilings were higher Probably would have added another fixture in that space as well.
I don’t think you’ll have an issue with your lights feeling cluttered or cramped, if that’s what is concerning you. Once your furniture is in place those areas will all be more defined.

I have 10 ft ceilings in the space. i plan to add sconces on the media wall and oossibly behind the dining table as well. maybe if i keeo the lighting more simple itll help it feel less cluttered? thanks for your help!

People usually suggest thinking of light in layers. Maybe you want a set of recessed lights everywhere, which are easy to flip on from a switch/dimmer, and then table lamps or sconces for more pleasant lighting when you settle in. If the space isn't too large, a single ceiling fixture could be fine for getting around the room -- one in the living area, and one in the dining area -- but if you're doing recessed in one part of a continuous space, I'd put at least a few in the other part, just to give yourself options. Kitchens can never have enough lighting! :)

^so true! Recessed everywhere, and definitely under cab lights in kitchen.

As for the living room light, if i had a taller ceiling would have used one, just because i was enjoying picking out pretty lights, lol. We use just the lamps 99% of time in that space
