should I mulch my garlic?

I've never mulched onions as it is more or less rumored that mulch, at least during bulbing, interferes with the quality of the crop by keeping the top of the soil too moist. One would think the same might be true for all alliums, but I've seen it said that mulching is VERY important for garlic. Now, I'm wondering if this is just for deep freeze protection for hardnecks up north. That kind of protection is entirely unnecessary down here. So, mulch garlic? Yes or no?
