burned to the ground

last year

i have a 2' swathe of land that runs along my driveway. most plants don't thrive there so it's planted in sweet yellow clover, alfalfa ( for the bees ), beebalm, Russian sage & ditch lilies. the neighbors yard has 3 pin oaks that buries this patch in leaves every year. my street is kinda busy & i have to pick up litter every few days. someone must have tossed a cigarette cuz the leaves caught fire & burned everything down to the ground. the alfalfa & sweet yellow clover should be fine but i'm concerned about the ditch ( common day lilies ) lilies & russian sage. any thoughts?

Can't comment about your other plants, but the daylilies will be fine. Can't kill them.

The daylilies and Russian sage are perennials and the lillies are bulbs, so unless the heat of the fire damaged the underground parts, they should be fine.

I personally would dig them up and can you put them in your garden or in an out of the way area for now? I think that they would do better than in the pots and they can be dug up and moved when she has the place to put them in...better to try and save them than loss them for sure - losing everything to a fire very devastating.

I am getting several answers from people who do seem to be just covering their butts. However, I seriously do not want to poison my family. I just don't know what to do. I just received this email response from my local extension agent: "All kinds of chemicals can become airborne and travel in the smoke from a fire. If your garden was engulfed by the smoke from this burning building, I would play it safe and remove all plants from the garden. We know that certain molecules can be brought into the plants from smoke (CO, NO2, NO3, etc.). There are studies that show the detriment of this damage (but those studies are limited to the effect this has on the plant, not necessarily on the human consuming them). I have personally seen smoke damage (CO damage) on tomatoes in high tunnels heated by wood-fired stoves when the chimney stack failed. With this, it is not a far leap to assume that other materials could make their way into the plant (though you would almost certainly see this affect the plantsÃ¯Â¿Â½ health). Having said all of that, if you do not want to remove all plants, at least remove any existing "food." That is, any leafy vegetables and any fruit from fruiting vegetables (tomato, pepper, eggplant, etc), this includes root crops, as these foods were subjected to the questionable smoke. Anything that develops from here on out will not have been directly subjected to the smoke, but the plants will have, so this is still risky, just not as much. Sorry to hear that this happened to your garden. Better to be safe than sorry." What do you guys think? Should I consider my huge garden a total loss or should I just remove the current fruits?? RE: The US Forestry Service spends far too much money and too many firefighters die each season trying to protect property that can be rebuilt. If a homeowner decides to build in a forest then they should be responsible for protecting their homes. Create a fire protection zone, buy fire insurance or take your chances. Ah, a voice of reason. I think that is a great point. And a corollary I've been frustrated with is the subsidized rescue / reconstruction of New Orleans. A city that everyone knew was bound to flood (as it's on the coast and below sea level in hurricane alley) Why should the average joe taxpayer foot the bill for someone else's risky choice and rebuild a city that should be a wetland and inevitably will be again? I mean we're all in agreement that sea levels are going to be rising over the next few decades right? The point being, you can't complain about a problem (fires, floods, whatever) when you know damn well its going to happen when you go there. It's like renting an apartment above a bar and then complaining about the noise late at night. I don't mean to trivialize the loss of property and life in either scenario. But maybe let's stop throwing money and the lives of 20 year old kids at the problem and think about it. And maybe do the same with respect to our foreign policy..... sorry i digress

My Japanese Painted Ferns made me sad, they're just black. Most of my heuchera leaves are laying flat on the ground. Hostas of course are mushy and most of my sedum and iris. Some of the sedum and iris look fine though. My sassafras has black leaves too. I wonder if these will still bloom - all have dead leaves: Oakleaf and Annabelle hydrangea Variegated dogwood Weigela Clematis Iris - Some of my iris don't look as bad as others These already had buds and the leaves and buds are both dead so I'm guessing no flowers this year: Viburnum Trilobum Viburnum 'Shasta' and 'Onondaga' Tulip tree These had finished blooming but may not set seed/fruit: (birds may have trouble finding food this year) Flowering dogwood Red Elderberry serviceberry Redbud Mohawk and Aurora viburnum I wonder if our oak trees will have acorns this year. ! Some good news - My Nannyberry and Blackhaw viburnum had buds but I think they might go ahead and bloom. They're not as wilted. My raspberries are only a little wilted- no buds yet. Garden phlox look great. Creeping phlox is wilted but still has some blooms. Candytuft has flowers and looks even better than my creeping phlox. Lowe's had covered a lot of their plants with heavy black plastic when I was there but it got so cold, I wonder if it worked.

How careless of someone to do that! So sorry you had to deal with that. I agree that unless any roots were damaged the plants should be fine.

thanks for reenforcing what i believed to be true. honestly it was kind of a blessing not having to deal with the leaves. too bad it didn't happen after ALL the leaves had fallen. i mowed all the leaves in the back yard into mulch today.

of all the plants.. the ditch lily is the one id worry least about ...

my drive is near 3 cars wide. they won't cross under in my life time. what's queer is all plants struggle in this patch. the ditch lilies always come back but die back early in july .

BUT the lilies & russian sage come up in the expansion joints & thrive. i'm thinking that like the liriope on the other side of the drive these plants are deprived of water by the 3 pin oaks on the other side of the fence. these trees are a pain & i'm a fan of trees. they have been butchered by the power company so many times that they are eyesores. the power company offered to take them down for free because they are a thorn in their side. the owner who owned three blocks of rentals was a total ^7$#**** refused. my pet name for him was bucket head. the power lines have actually caught the trees on fire. a neighbor across the street once called the fire dept. once cuz he though my house was on fire. there's also a huge oak at the rental across the street that was lightning struck. i saw it happen. it blew a 10' long chunk out of the trunk. there's a split than runs in a spiral from the ground to a fork 45' up. it's a disaster waiting to happen.

Sorry you experienced this! I am reminded of stories where gardeners sometime burned their perennials to the ground to ‘clear’ them for the season. While that may not be the current way of thinking, I think what you’ve got should be fine.
