Please weigh in on my rug choices!
Comments (24)thanks for all of the input! oakley, i love yellow too. The room was previously turquoise and lime green and while I like those colors, it was a little dark in there and not very cheery. I just checked out PB rugs. I love the rugs at PB teen, but braided rugs are a little traditional for the space, which is leaning towards eclectic/modern. pricklypear, very nice C&B rug - that led me to the rug i ended up buying. The rug should ship in 7-10 days. I'm excited as this room has been in disarray for months. My little one will have a fun, happy spot to play in soon. :) I'll post photos once the room is done. thanks, Pip...See MoreNeed some help with fabric choice in kitchen
Comments (19)Wow, you guys are great! EMH, it's called Golden Crema. I also found it called Crema Romanzo and Golden Delicatus. I think these places just make up names. LL, I don't know that I love red, but I don't mind it. I'm not sure I have any color I truly love. Although my daughter will say that black is my fav color because that's all I wear. I do have a Dobag rug in front of the fridge and another in the family room (where that 3rd window is) that I really like and that will stay. Here's what it looks like and its in front of the fridge I think i'm liking the Suzani direction for the reasons Marcolo stated - kind of hip & current, but an ancient pattern. I like the Ikat's too. pllog, melissa, right - since it is for Roman shades, I won't ever see the whole big red circle. I won't ever pull the shades down. I really could care less if the elderly Chinese couple next door sees us cook. It is more rusty than bright Chinese red - the local fabric shop near me has it in their window so I've visited it in person. The smaller circle is definitely a rust that matches the rust (caramel) in the granite. And the cream background is the same as the granite. Yeah it will probably make the pendant disappear, won't it? The pendant actually has red about 1/4" all around the bottom. I wanted a bolder one but this was the only one my husband liked. Florantha, wow, thanks! It will be 2 shades within the window frame. I hadn't even thought about randomizing the pattern. Would you? I didn't even think out of the symmetrical box! I should stop in C&B - that Marimekko is cool. I remember them having a pretty good selection of fabrics for purchase too at their design center (if it is still in that store downtown!) Mikomum, thanks! There were more windows in the original plan, but when the costs came in, we got rid of the required steel beam and went for shear wall instead. Those windows are south facing so the light is good all year/all day long. The piece in the back is more kitchen cabinets, although with small knobs rather than large pulls, 27" deep to hide the stereo equipment. Yes! Florantha does deserve a gift certificate! I like the birds! And the brown with red flowers one! (maybe I do like red ;) The grey/black/white ones might work perhaps, but for some reason don't seem warm enough to me? (But what do I know, I'm really bad at this stuff...) I also failed to mention that I planted a tree outside that window. The kitchen is like 1 story (almost) up, so eventually we will have greenery visible in the lower part of those window. It won't get tall enough to block any light, but will be bright green. I forgot the name of the kidn of tree, but they are pretty common here. It's got very small leaflets on willow like branches....See MoreProposed FAQ-Countertop Material Choices
Comments (54)I'll stick up for laminate. Not sure what exactly to say other than for me its the practicality and low maintenance that make it my first choice regardless of the fact that its also inexpensive. In my experience: Resists stains I fairly regularly splatter tomato sauce or spill orange juice, vinegar and no I don't wipe it up right away, (sometimes not for a couple of days!) and no etching! Put all the wet glasses you want on it and leave it. No rings. Resists scratches (I cut on mine, somewhat carefully, rather regularly) Low heat resistant - never put a burn mark on one yet just stick a heating pad under really hot things. What's a trivet? (just kidding) Easier on your dishes and glasses (I put things down pretty hard and know I would break things on granite) Warm to the touch (compared to stone and metals which just freeze me out) Chipping - I've never had a problem though others have. I assume it has to do with quality level of the laminate and possibly the underlayment and installation (and user of course) I think stone products probably chip as much if not more. If you get the prefab'd type that has the bullnose thing going up the wall there isn't even a grout line to maintain between the counter and wall - which while it looks cheap - I love! I hate any kind of grout line. I seem to flood my counters regularly with something and I love that curved laminate. You don't have to clean it right away, You don't have to remember exactly what products you can or can't clean it with as long as you don't use anything really extreme or harsh. You don't have to seal it, oil it, or bleach it (wood) So its easy easy easy and inexpensive. Tired of it? cheap to replace or cover. And it comes in more colors, textures, finishes and edging styles than ever before. My mother has her original fake marble shiny laminate from 1969 and it still looks great, no kidding (well other than the fake marble is a little uh... out of style:)...See MoreWeigh in? Comments (24)I've never had leather because I don't care for the feel. I don't care for the boxy velvet sofa either in style or how uncomfortable it looks. With any pets, I'd worry about the crap that gathers in the tufts. I have a few tufted cushions and they're hopeless to clean. I have two black and white cats and their fur shows up equally on dark and light things. They are allowed on furniture. These cats don't take no for an answer. I have towels, throws and faux sheepskin dotted around on my furniture. It's not a great look, but it's the reality of life with animals. I have a mid-sage green velvet chair and ottoman and it's holding up well with the cats, esp. since they play King of the Mountain on it. I have one of these lint brushes and it's amazing for getting cat hair off furniture, rugs, etc....See MoreRelated Professionals
