lighting over surface mount medicine cabinet
Comments (5)I have the same issue. The problem with the over the cabinet lights (two or three) is they are not designed to protrude enough from the wall to provide direct light, in fact the cabinet will likely cause a shadow line. Our cabinets come out 4 - 4 1/2 inches. I have a three bulb light I like and am thinking of having someone make a box that will match the cabinets. The box would be the same depth, surface mount, wood, stain and design as the cabinets... Has anyone seen lights that are designed for a surface mount medicine cabinet that do not look like the cheap exposed bulb or florescent variety?...See MoreNarrow sconce? Comments (7)Can your medicine cabinet be recessed at all? If you are down to the studs, now is the time to be framing out the recess for the cabinet, cut the studs box it out with header. You say the vanity has a side wall on the left side. Open up that wall, create more storage there with an additional, preferably recessed, medicine cabinet. Think about the projection of the lighting fixture, particularly if you go with over the mirror mount. You want to try to get the light coming out beyond the projection of the cabinet, this avoid the cabinet creating a shadow. Projection is a factor, as is the distance above the mirror you can install, the shape of the light, the directionality of the light, etc. With a 48" vanity I think a 30 - 36" mirror with a sconce on both sides and a second side wall cabinet would be great....See MorePaint medicine cabinet door same color as wall or vanity cabinet?
Comments (13)Agree with Judy that the mirror should be the same color as vanity and side med cab should be the same color as the walls. Just be sure to get a satin or semigloss in the same color as the walls to paint the cabinet. Be sure to do proper prep to take the gloss off of all items before painting, use a primer, too. Top coat will stick better, be less likely to chip....See MoreDesign help for over-the-toilet cabinet for powder room
Comments (17)@tfitz1006 Did you mean closet, and not shower? We use the closet for jackets, shoes, backpacks, etc. It's a powder bathroom, so no shower at all. You can see the powder room here. The top side is the staircase along the full length. The right side is the garage. The bottom side is the hallway running from the garage to the foyer. The left side is the main floor closet which is tiny because I'm pretty sure there is a wet wall with plumbing behind it where the hot water pipes run from the water heater into the slab for the kitchen plumbing. The powder room is completely boxed in. About the only thing you could do is a small built-in lower cabinet that goes into the slanted area under the stairs, but because the doorway is only 2' and so cramped, it would be more difficult to access, and it allows us to store larger items out of the way in the garage. Given how hard it would be to bend over to access it in the cramped space, this would not be worth the money it would cost. We chose to put our money into the master bathroom and kitchen instead, but this was sort of rolled into it when we learned the kitchen flooring had an issue mid-remodel, and had to pick a floor tile that worked with our old tile, which we weren't going to replace because it covered so much area, including the bathroom. We replaced all of the old tile that was connected with new tile, but we had planned to do the powder room at later date until that necessitated removing the toilet and sink anyway... Got to love the snowballing of a remodel, right?...See MoreRelated Professionals
