Alexander Payne movies

We are great fans of Alexander Payne's movie---- Sideways, The Descendants, About Schmitt, Nebraska, Election. Have DVD's of several and watch them on occasion.

We just saw the latest movie, The Holdovers, and we loved it. It's set in 1970, and in an elite boys prep school over the Christmas holidays, starring Paul Giamatti.

It will not be in the theaters much longer with all the T'Giving big movies and the kiddie movies being released, but watch for it on streaming if you miss it in the theaters. Wonderful movie.

I posted this more than 24 hours ago, and it just now shows up. Harumph!

But DH and I were just talking about how much this lovely movie is staying with us, making us think. Look for it on streaming.

Agreed. It was a movie that, while sentimental in parts, never got maudlin. The acting and directing were wonderful, and you left the theater with some of your faith in humanity restored. Plus they got the '70s look and feel exactly right. It's a real gem.

Bookwoman, have you seen other Payne movies? We are real fans. And I was fascinated by the actor who played Angus. He was a student at Deerfield, and his drama teacher recommended him.

floraluk, look for this one, Giamatti is at his best.

I really liked some of the movies you listed but haven’t seen the others, so I will look for them. I’m embarrased to say that ai never paid attention to Payne’s name and didn’t recognize it. I will look for The Holdovers, too.

And like floral, I will watch (nearly) anything with Paul Giamatti.

I adore Nebraska and Bruce Dern. Did you see Descendants? More mainstream, big time movie, but lovely. Most of the movies involve a roadtrip, I notice. And many of these movies got Oscar nominations. I'd guess that Payne is an actor's director in many ways. Have never watched Billions, but I watch very little TV.

I did see The Descendants, and thought it was fun, but not as good as some of his other films. But in any event, I do like his whole sensibility.

And yes, Billions is so much fun: Giamatti and Damian Lewis get to chew the scenery, and the show captures a certain slice of life that's great to watch.

I watch about 2 hours of TV a day, which includes the news. I can't recall the last time I got into a scripted show, and Survivor is my one vice.

None of these seem to be on Netfilx. I vaguely remember seeing a preview of Nebraska some time ago and it looked interesting, so I'm about to rent it on Youtube. Heading to Nebraska in a few days, myself. Thanks for the recommendations.

Correction on my TV habits --- college and pro football, baseball when it's Giants or Phillies. No scripts there.
