This list is a handy reference of information for Exhibitors and Judges. New registrations with IRAR, or corrections will be posted as it becomes available in various ARS publications. These lists are not meant to supersede, but compliment the 2005 AEN. Rose Lists are published on the last day of each month and only as up to-date as ARS allows. My all-time favorites from RU are: Sonia Rykiel (a dozen blooms per flush in 1st year as own-root), Versigny (the scent is worth buying), Poseidon (going to frost with 30+ buds), Summer Sun (compact & small for a Kordes rose), Savannah (non-stop blooming), Pink Peace (great for the vase), Sweet Mademoiselle and Firefighter (both last 5 days in the vase), Betty White, Twilight Zone, About Face, Liv Tyler, and many Austins that RU sold before 2021. Below upper pink is Sonia Rykiel, dark red is the Dark Lady (from RU): Below dark red is Munstead Wood, and and orange About Face, red is Firefighter. Below orange is America, light pinks are Gene Boerner (thornless), and blue is Poseidon. Big red is Peter Mayle (survives 5+ years in my zone 5a winter): Below yellows are Moonlight Romantica (smells just as good as Golden Cel). Upper light pinks are Princess Charlene de Monaco (now 10' x 3') needs space. Blue is Poseidon lasts 5 days. Liv Tyler (right deep pink) never ball like Sweet Mademoiselle, Liv Tyler gives twice more blooms than Sweet M. Left dark pink is Pink Peace (worth buying with its buttercream frosting scent). Right light pink is Frederic Mistral (petals get spoiled often in rainy climate, worse than Betty White) Below was Liv Tyler in my garden at above 90 F, it's best for hot climate.

You make an interesting point, Heather. Julia Child is not 'the most fabulous' rose. There are many many roses that are more fabulous than Julia Child, but can you grow them without spraying and they stay healthy? I've always thought JC was not perfect, even though I rave about Julia all the time. But, I went for decades gardening without roses, because I thought I wouldn't be able to grow them at all, without pesticides etc., and there was no way I was doing that. I am 100% organic, I have never bought any product for disease or pests. I am sure there are organic gardeners who will use products labeled organic, but I will not. Eventually, though, I thought why should I not at least try to grow what amounts to my favorite flower. So, I started to explore the possibilities. I settled for a Knock Out Rose, thinking that was the best I could do. And after 2 years of that, it did not satisfy me in any way and out it went. So my first rose purchases after that were potted roses, bought locally. Meidland roses, David Austin roses. maybe a hybrid tea or two. Terrible experience with all of them. They were a mess of one kind or another. And it wasn't until I spent a winter researching on the Rose Forum, asking for experiences of healthy roses, and then on the site HelpMeFind, that I started to complie a list of possibles. Then was directed to a good nursery that focused on offering healthy roses and used organic practices by people on the Rose Forum. So I made my first order from Pickering for bare root roses. Julia Child, Prairie Sunrise, New Dawn, which I still had until I lost New Dawn trying to move it last year. All three of these roses were healthy. Very, very healthy. And vigorous. And all had fragrance that you don't get in a Knock Out rose. And Julia is the best I've grown as far as vigor, hardiness, form, repeat bloom, fragrance, and especially lack of disease and I'm fortunate not to have an insect issue either. Mine is fragrant. It's not wafting through the front yard, but if you put it to your nose it has a good amount of fragrance. And on the kitchen counter it has fragrance in the house. It's not like she has no fragrance. She has stood up to heat, drought, humidity, cold winters, poor pruning in the beginning, being moved a few times. And she comes back beautiful every spring. She requires very little of me. I spend more time on some of my perennials than I do tending this rose. So she fits my needs and my situation exceptionally well. And you mention not an interesting flower form. Interestingly, this spring, I've had her 10 years now, I noticed that the form of the flower was much more interesting than usual. It had that sort of button interior. Looks like one of Diane's photos I've seen, of a close up of her blooms that have that button center. The reason I think that happened this spring, is because we had a very mild winter last year, and she has been in this same spot 3 years now, so not recovering from a move, and she started off the season with new growth all the way to the tops of the canes, whereas most years I have to cut her just about back to the ground. I still wanted a rose with a larger flower and always happy to find a more fragrant rose, and I'm still buying new roses here and there, trying to outdo Julia. I bought Beverly from Palatine a few years ago. Very large flowers, nice fragrance, repeat bloom, very clean foliage. But her fragrance doesn't waft either and the flowers when they first open are a bubble gum pink that I dislike. And a few of her petals start looking old before she fully opens the bloom. And Prairie Sunrise has larger flowers and fragrance and repeat bloom and clean foliage. I've never seen an unhappy leaf on New Dawn, but she did have small flowers and mild scent and no repeat bloom, but she had other attributes that I enjoyed and she is a keeper for me too. I added Aloha that has been healthy and her blooms have been very interesting, but, mildly fragrant and her blooms go by fast, and her repeat so far has been underwhelming. But I was growing her in part sun and just moved her to full sun and waiting for next year to see how she will perform. Julia is still my favorite. I've had other roses that I've shovel pruned. Pope Paul was the white I wanted but it did develop blackspot for me so that lasted three seasons and was gone. I could compare it to having friends. None of them are perfect as we aren't perfect ourselves. if you go down a checklist of qualities you'd appreciate in a friend, which one of your friends has all of them? Why do so many rose lovers end up buying so many roses? Because no rose is perfect and I suppose if you have the room for them and the money and time to care for them, you just keep adding new ones, trying to find one that is better than those you already have. The deal breaker for me is health and vigor. If I don't have that, no matter what else the plant has, I can't enjoy it. Yellow roses aren't even my favorite color....lol. Julia Child, has won my heart many times over, by having so many great qualities and being a consistent performer in my garden year after year. There just aren't that many plants that I can say that about.

I ordered Geschwinds Orden from RVR because I thought it would stay small … I soon realized my error. HMF says 13’ minimum. I contacted RVR, and they are substituting La Marne. Polyanthas I can deal with. My only other order this year will be from Burlington. Lady Kidwell and Clotilde Soupert. She sent me a CS last year, but I let it drown in our El Niño. Trying again.
