garlic issue, not coming up

I have always saved my own garlic to replant. I simply put the biggest cloves into the fridge. This year I also ordered some late garlic. I believe the garlic I saved is early garlic, not sure what kind.

I planted the garlic I save 10/17. None are up.

I planted the garlic I bought 10/23. several are up 3 inches.

Both are planted in the same bed. I am sure rain/weather etc did not factor in. What is going on with my saved garlic? Why has none come up? I never had an issue in the past.

I can only guess since I've grown garlic just once about 20 years ago. My guess would be that if you planted the garlic stored in the fridge directly into cold soil (if it was cold there?) then maybe it didn't wake up (warm up) enough before planting? My 2nd guess would be that the garlic you ordered was already in an early sprouting/tip stage upon arrival so it had a head start?

I'm going to get a photo today...but I think I know what you are describing and it well may be my garlic :) But I also have day lillies that are sprouting up (and tulips) how's that for confusion.....and the day lillies in the containers, look JUST like what I figured was day lillies in the flower beds... Are you talking about how the tulip fan's out after it's above ground? This is what I'm seeing a lot of...and it's probably my garlic....

If it was California I'd suggest gophers as the pests, but don't know about the nasty pests you have in MN. Also, I have grown in the same in raised beds for 10 years and do not rotate and have had no trouble with disease. Of course, the mix I use is nearly dirt-less which might make a difference. So sorry for your disappointing loss.

To be honest I really don't think its onion root maggots. Like I said before, these little worms were unsegmented and not at all stubby in the shape of onion root maggots. There were no wild onions in this field beforehand - it was an unwatered, sparse field consisting of only a few grasses and bindweed. It has been really wet here this year, and I am beginning to think it has something to do with that. The garlic leaves have started to become striped with yellow, which makes me think it might be some sort of disease (i.e. fusarium basal plate rot?) I think the little wormies might have been secondary feeders. In any case, despite the yellowing and missing roots at the basal plate, the plants are looking large and pretty robust. Hopefully they survive and I can still get a good harvest.

Also what kind of drain holes and drainage materials did you have in the bottom of the barrels. Sound to me at this point like your drainage was not good enough. I seriously doubt you had winter kill unless you were planting Creoles in Canada, and even then I would not expect a complete failure. Half barrels are just very large flower pots, but they are not raised beds. You have to handle them like flower pots especially in regard to drainage out of the container and potting soil that does not compact around your plants. You use potting soil not garden soil.

Fair point about soil temperature. I read online that at 10C, at least southern garlic may take a month to pop up to the surface. At 20-30C, it can take a week or less. May be different for different varieties.

Stuff I ordered was not sprouted at all. Actually it looked bad, some was brown and soft I was happy any came up. My stuff was planted earlier and if anything it was warmer. Soil temp should not matter unless it is different for different garlic because the stuff that came up was planted about a week later. It is so weird that NONE of the stuff I saved came up and it looked great when I planted it. When I originally picked it I missed some and it is growing fine. I just checked again and more and more of the store bought is coming up and none of what I saved.

At first I think it could have froze in my fridge, but even that should not kill it but might delay it from sprouting. It was more than 1 clove, 2 or 3. I have not dug any up any yet because it seems pointless - I cannot really fix it now. I will soon, I just keep hoping:)

Also I note every year when I plant it and I have planted it later before I never noted when it came up but I am sure it was always up this long after planting. It has now been 31 days.

I do have 3 that barely sprouted (1/2"). Not sure why it took so long but I suspect they will come up in spring!
