Design Ideas Needed
I’m looking for design ideas for this fireplace wall. It looks empty and boring, and would like to make it look prettier. Any tips? Thinking of shiplap/tile or perhaps just paint it? Thanks!

6 months agoThere are so many options. The fireplace won't exist in a vacuum, so it depends on your style. Do you have furniture you're going to use in this room, or are you going to be buying new? Do you need to have a TV in this room? Since the floors are covered we don't know what those look like. I have a lot of fireplace pictures saved because I'm redoing mine next year. See if any of these strike a chord for you. There is a "fireplace" search option in the Houzz pictures if you want to see more ideas.

Comments (5)I like your chandelier choice. You might be able to go bigger and definitely hang it lower than your current fixture. I would consider pulling one of the colors out of the rug for your drapery panels, use a more substantial fabric than you have now. They should also be hung a little wider. Are they always closed for privacy purposes? Hopefully one of the pros will chime in with buffet suggestions. Something for on top of the table would look nice too, perhaps a long tray of succulents. Comments (7)Would replace the countertops -- solid color and smooth ... no raised feature atop the countertop on the living room / dining room side. If the "island" -- ?the long row of cabinets on the right?-- is crooked at about the dishwasher, as it appears to me to be, then would straighten that -- even if it means ending the cabinets at the dishwasher and making the rest of the cabinets to the right of the dishwasher a separate base cabinet or rolling cart cabinet. If, however, it is just the dishwasher that is angled, would straighten that even if it means replacing the dishwasher. Would replace the cabinet hardware. To me, the cabinets seem too large for the knobs or the knobs too small for the cabinet doors. But I'm not a pro. Like the rest. Nice kitchen. Great space. Great beams and window trim. Have you considered a more dominant mantel with a straight front edge? If you can separate the tall base cabinets from the shorter base cabinets and create two separate islands, each with a level countertop, consider doing that. Comments (4)Correct! We are painting them. The cabinets themselves are in excellent shape. For the island we will be using cabinets that match the base of the rest - raised panel. We are redoing the floor (removing the stick on tile and just extending the hardwood) so it's all the same as the dining room. We are on a raised foundation and have a full unfinished basement underneath. Since we've lived with it, what bothers me is that 1) there is not enough light coming into the home and 2) the oven door is directly in the way of the door leading to the outside. Having a sliding patio door would solve for both of these problems as it would let in 2x the amount of light and would guarantee that since only one panel would be used, there will never be anyone in the path of the oven door....See Moremytwo cents

6 months agoYou might not want to take this on right now, but I would love to see a plank ceiling on the slope with a stain the color of the handrail. Meantime, picture two mirrors replacing the windows in this inspiration photo.

4 months agoAre you going to have a TV in the space? It seems like you could do a few things with the fireplace. If having a TV, you might consider placing in on the blank wall across from the windows. You could easily place book shelves on either side of the fireplace, consoles with art over them, or have 2 chairs flanking either side of the fireplace. Below are a few visuals that might help you figure out exactly what you'd like to do in this space.

2 months agoThere are a lot of things you could do to the fireplace area to make it stand out more and be more your own. Below are some fireplace areas. Maybe look at doing a console on one side with either a TV over it or some artwork? Then look at placing a tall plant on the other side. Here are the designs to help you more:
