Should I reupholster my 23 yr. old Ethan Allen sofas?
Comments (2)Live_Wire_Oak,thanks for responding. I certainly value your opinion. I'm well aware that EA sofas today are not at all the same quality and had no intention of ordering from them, but rather from a higher end manufacturer. In fact, when my sofas were new, I was somewhat disappointed with how these cushions sat compared with what I had been accustomed to with my other sofa. I want sofas to last through my retirement years and am willing to pay to get that quality. The concern is that our family lays on these sofas often to watch TV or rest. I already know that the proportions of the loveseat, including the T-seat cushion allows for comfortable leg extension and all the padding on the rolled arm rest works well as a head support. And the dimensions work well in the room even though I have downsized to a smaller home. I should add that my ID is self-employed and charges by the hour so it financially makes no difference as far as she is concerned which direction I go. Also, the style I like is frequently available for customization by some of the major sofa manufacturers such as Henredon, Massoud, and Hickory Chair....See MoreMCM sofa fabric choice help
Comments (14)Really cool couch! I am color challenged, but what I would do is look at some of the knoll or maharam fabrics. I bought a 1958 knoll sofa reupholstered in a white/cream knoll fabric that looks to be very high quality. http://www.maharam.com/products/search http://www.knoll.com/shop/knolltextiles Also, I would search adrian pearsall online to see if you can find examples of what other people have reupholstered to see if anything catches your eye. Also, may go through some web sites that sell new mcm like furniture. I might start with design within reach (dwr) or hivemodern.com. Maybe go through the color choices for the raleigh sofa and see if you like any of them. http://www.dwr.com/product/raleigh-sofa-wool.do?sortby=ourPicks http://www.dwr.com/category/living/sofas/raleigh.do I have some maharam fabric samples for two mcm lounge chairs I bought on ebay. I became so paralyzed with indecision on color, that I put them back in the storage room. Your post reminds me that I need to revive that project!...See MoreEdward Wormley Party Sofa | Keep/Reupholster or Sell?
Comments (9)Hi jemdandy - nope none of it comes apart. It's just one gigantic couch :) We decided to bring the sofa to our new home, thinking that even if we wanted to sell it the market would be better here than our old location. I also wanted to get a real quote for doing the reupholstry since I've heard people guess anything from like $800 for labor to a few thousand. I contacted a well reviewed upholsterer in town and he quoted me $950 for labor plus $100 for new foam. I would provide my own fabric and I'm going to try to find some for ~$20/yard if I can. All in all that's not too bad - it's a lot less than I thought it would be - and it's probably less than we would spend on a comparable quality couch so we've decided to keep the sofa and reupholster it. For now we'll have a couch to sit on and we can defer the decision to keep/sell for the next time we move ;) Thank you all for your help and opinions!...See Moreliving room design, reupholstering furniture and arrangement
Comments (7)I like your upholstered furniture as is. They are slightly different styles but all pulled together with the cream colour. If you start changing the colour on some of the pieces you run the risk of fracturing the current cohesiveness. The rug, I'm sorry, doesn't work. If this was my room, I'd replace rug with a large oriental rug with colour. Could be dark reds or golds or blues etc. Or all those colours! Then pick out a colour from the rug and hang drapery side panels on your windows, keep the shears. Your room looks a little sparse so I'd add a shallow sideboard beside the fireplace, a couple small tables for people to put drinks on. Then accessorize with art and decor. But I would definitely start by replacing the rug with a colourful rug and use that as your jumping off point. Because your room is currently all neutral, you can go in any direction with colour. Whats your favourite colour?...See MoreRelated Professionals
