What to do with... broken down tree log debris...

I don't even know what to call it lol!

I am cleaning out a LONG-neglected corner behind the garage, (I'm talking YEARS!) and there was a small pile of tree logs/firewood that never got used. I discovered when I moved a few top logs that there is a pile of lovely, dark, crumbly stuff, with bits of wood still in it. (Unfortunately lots of roots to disentangle as well.)

I'm thinking this HAS to be good stuff, no? But I'm not sure what to do with it. Can I dump it directly in my garden beds? Should I throw it in the compost pile first? I'm thinking I've got some kind of hugelkultur thing going on but I'm not sure how to proceed.

Thanks for any input!

:)
