small rectangular living-room
I have lived in this house for 30 year. Our living room is 12x19 with a corner wood burning fireplace which we want to keep. This is where we watch tv, read, knit or just relax. The shape of the room makes it difficult to arrange and I’m looking for ideas to change the arrangement and open to buying new furniture (btw, we’re empty nesters so not opposed to just having 2 comfy chairs but the possibility of having more seating on occasion would be good. The right lighting also has been a very difficult to achieve. I have included two photos taken from opposite ends of the room.
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

last yearif this were mine, I would separate the room in half. the TV viewing area with a sofa table behind the love seat/sofa at an angle with a rug centered on the fireplace.
The other side of the room a rug to gound the space and a seating arrangement for conversation.
... paint only the wall behind the TV a darker tone and slim down the console underneath the TV.

Comments (3)A picture would help, but I'll show you my diagonal fireplace and see if that helps. I have smaller furniture so that it's relatively mobile. There is no tv in my room so we focus the furniture on the fireplace...is your fireplace something you want to highlight or ignore? Since mine is floating I have furniture behind it as well: It really depends on what you want to focus on. Our room is basically used in the evening when entertaining or occasionally as a reception room if someone drops by. Because we normally use it at night we don't have the pieces faced so they can see the view like we do in the other parlor (used much more during the day). Comments (9)Jennran, I think the first thing you need to do is figure out how you want to use this space. Do you want a dining area in this room? Do you need a dining area in this room, i.e. is there anywhere else to put a table in the house? What else will you use this room for? Will it be the main TV watching area, or is there a separate family room? Do yo have kids and will they be using this room and if so, what for? Will this room be used to entertain guests? Will it be used by you and your DH at night, to chat and unwind? Until you know what you want to do in the room, it will be difficult for you to work out how to arrange it. That said, you can put the dining area anywhere you want to. My apartment is part of a large old house that was split up into 5 units. I have less than half the original living room as my living room and all of the original dining room as a dining room. Which is all well and good, but the living room is much, much smaller than the dining room. And you enter directly into the living room. So I'm in the process of switching the living and dining rooms. (Or I will be as soon as I find a dining table I like.) When I'm done, you will enter into a combination foyer/dining room, with a round dining table in the center of the room. The dining room will be a living room, with seating for at least 5 people. To give you an idea, I would move the TV to the opposite wall and buy a corner end table basically like this
and put it into the empty corner on the fireplae side of the room. Then I would buy a modular sofa seating unit configured like this
to go between the table and the fireplace, and then buy its right-armed match to go on the wall facing the fireplace, to make an "L". I would have a swivel chair facing this arrangement. I'd have an easy-to-move occasional chair in the adjacent room for times when more seating is needed.

PRO10 months agoYou could try floating a sofa or sectional on a rug in the middle of the room. Then perhaps look at placing a sofa table behind it and you could do a small sitting area behind the sofa or sectional. Below are a few visuals to help you visualize what it might look like.
