Is this a viburnum

Brought a family member for a medical procedure today and took a walk in the parking lot. It backs onto a small wooded area. This spring I was there and found a lovely huge patch of marsh marigolds there. Today I saw this.... is this a viburnum? Sorry, my phone takes lousy pictures but I think it's clear enough to tell

This little area is such a lovely little hidden treat. I don't think it was purposely planted, and of course there's lots of invasives and aggressives in there - bittersweet, honeysuckle, grapevine, poison ivy - but there's a little stream and it's kind of sad that so many people are so close to this every day and they don't really notice.

I guess someone, however, is enjoying it. There's this spot:

Last spring I walked in there but too much poison ivy around now!

The berry stems and leaf veining in the 2nd photo looks like a viburnum to me.

Looks like Siebold Viburnum. Considered moderately invasive in some areas.

Thank you for your quick response. Yes, it leaf out early in the spring during relatively high temp in MarÃ¯Â¿Â½12 and then got hit with cold temperature for few days. The leaves staring turning brown when the temp changed and I also applied fert spikes just before the cold temp. I will stick to your watering instructions as I read somewhere that watering once a week might help washing extra fert away from the roots. Any other advice as I need to save it....Thanks Again!

Dirr apparently has the same concern. Under the section for V. carlesii (Korea), he shows V. b. as a "related species". He says V. b. (Korea, Japan) is somewhat similar to V. carlesii but "with smaller leaves, more slender stems, looser habit and smaller flowers". He says that V. b. is considered "inferior" to V. carlesii. He later says that he keeps "looking for definitive ways to separate this from V. carlesii." And that "the looser, laxer, more open inflorescence and stronger dentate serrations toward apex of the leaf are helpful" in distinguishing it. This is from the Manual of Woody Landscape Plants. Someone with a copy of his Viburnum book may have more recent remarks of his.

Other than a susceptibility to Verticillium wilt (as are many other plants), not much bothers the doublefile. Without a doubt one of the most striking shrubs when in flower! Normally I would not suggest to prune to control width - that very wide, layered branching is one of their premier attributes. But the cultivar 'Summer Snowflake' tends to have a very upright, less spreading habit and can be much more easily kept to a narrower width. Also blooms sporadically throughout summer rather than in one big blast like more traditional cultivars.

It is important to remember that one of the primary features of this shrub is its layered, heavily tiered growth habit. One of the reasons it is sometimes referred to as the "wedding cake" shrub. Those layers are what shows off those upward rows of paired flowers that make it such a spectacular springtime show. For that reason, I would certainly thin out a majority of those straight, vertically growing suckers, leaving just a few (3?, 5?) of the largest to increase height and fullness. What you have now is simply too congested.

Hmm, interesting. I thought viburnums were natives, and didn't think natives were really invasive.

Viburnum species are not strictly native to North America.

I have a viburnum nudum which I always thought was a US native (and wondered if this was actually Dees)

There are quite a few viburnums native to North America and the United States, and many more that are not. Some of the exotic species and hybrids are quite tame, and others are not.

Viburnum nudum is native to North America, basically in the southeastern United States.

The pictured plant is Viburnum sieboldii as noted by @arbordave (SE MI). I have observed seedlings sprouting around Viburnum Valley from parent plants I've grown over the past three decades, but I'm not aware of true invasiveness elsewhere.

Easy way to separate this plant from most other viburnums: crush and smell a leaf. Unmistakeable fragrance of green bell peppers!
