Looking for advice..

Our builder forgot to add a chimney for our wood burning fireplace. We were the ones that brought it up to him but the roof and shingles are already done. He is saying that he can't do a chimney now because it will leak and is trying to convince us to do a gas fireplace instead which we do not want.

My question is, is it possible to do a chimney now without it leaking?
