Just one more reason to be grateful that we are a country of immigrants. However, some of our favorite apple varieties were bred in research facilities...McIntosh and Cortland are just two examples! They are neither native nor imported but invented. They are hybrid cultivars rather than natural varieties. They can only be reproduced by vegetative means. Our lowly crabs are prized for many culinary treats, just as other kinds of apples. They are just too sour to eat out of hand, for the most part. However, when I was studying at Va. Tech. and taking a number of pomology classes, we visited the research orchards many times and became familiar with some crabs that were delicious straight off the tree. Yum.

jasdip, Africa also has tropical rain forests second only to Amazonia which teem with flowering plants. I looked it up and apparently Antarctica has only 2 flowering plants that grow there. There are no trees or shrubs, and only two species of flowering plants are found: Antarctic hair grass (Deschampsia antarctica) and Antarctic pearlwort (Colobanthus quitensis).
