Size of medicine cabinet for 34.5 inch wide vanity

Hello, I have been searching on houzz and on the web regarding the appropriate size medicine cabinet for a 34.5 inch wide vanity. It seems for a 30-36 inch vanity, a 20 by 24 inch medicine cabinet is recommended, but that seems a little on the small side? My contractor had suggested 18 by 30. I do not want to under nor oversize it, does anyone have any experience putting in a medicine cabinet with a vanity that is between 30 to 36 inches in width (in my case 34.5 inches) and if so, what size did medicine cabinet did you use? I was looking at at least 20 by 30 or 24 by 30.

Are you planning on having lighting over the mirror or on the sides? How high are the ceilings?

Because of the narrowness of the bathroom, I was planning to do lighting over the mirror. It is an 8 foot ceiling.

Don't base your decision on the general dimensions. You need to look at actual tubs and, if possible, sit in them. I had a similar problem to yours in that I wanted no smaller than a 27-28" shower door, which limited the width of the adjoining tub options. After a ton of searching, I finally found a couple of 30" wide tubs that had equally large interior dimensions or felt more spacious inside than others. I ended up going with a Mirabelle Edenton (60"x30"x20") air bath, which was substantially cheaper than the wider Hydrosystems Lacey (and had a larger bottom interior dimension), and more attractive and sturdy feeling than the slightly cheaper Kohler Archer (which seems very tight inside but has good bottom interior dimensions. Anyhow, I'd take a closer look at 30" wide tubs and get the vanity you want. I just posted a video of the Edenton air bath in action if you want to check it out. I have a better picture now. I agree a 15 inch wide cabinet be too small. If you got a wider cabinet 20-30 inches you could put the sconces on either side. I think this would look to scale. If you are looking to save some money, how about a light fixture above the cabinet and using your old mirror by cutting it down into two pieces placed on each side of the cabinet? This would give you a the look of a full wall mirror. Is it possible to put the cabinet on one of the side walls? If yes, then cut the mirror down to 30 inches wide and then install sconces on either side. I think this would look better if the cabinet could be installed flush to the wall.

You can buy a mirrored medicine cabinet that has integrated LED lighting, which can also offer a nightlight with dinner function. So, you will not only have lighting from your main bathroom, but an additional light source. As for size, you can also get customized sizing where cabinets can be ganged together. Two 12 inch cabinets ganged together or two 15" ganged together would work where you can add lighting as an option and have interchangeable left or right open doors. It gives you alot of storage over your vanity without looking too wide. And if you want to spend the extra cost, you can have them recessed mounted as well. This will make them look flush with wall and less bulky over your smaller vanity. I hope this helps.

The sinks are about 18 inches across (I just double checked and the vanity is 71"). So 20 would be closer to the sink size...

I might be tempted to do a wider mirror. Kohler has one 30 inches wide and 26 inches tall that might work.

There is no standard width. Depends on the design of the bathroom.

In my previous house I used this recessed medicine cabinet from Robern in one of the secondary bathrooms. Nearly as wide as the 36" vanity. Had integrated LED lights. Left door is wider than the right one.

I think a relatively standard 24 or 30 wide, 36 tall would work, but honestly, get it as big as you need -- medicine cabinet space is fab!

(I note that a large squared cabinet tends to go with more modern style, although once you recess it, you can do any size up to the size of the vanity.)

I think you can go any size with the width. Narrow will read more classic and wider will read more contemporary. Have you selected a light fixture yet? 8" ceilings are not all that high, some light fixtures are really tall, as are a lot of faucets these days. Add up the distance from the bottom of your light fixture to the top of your faucet, then subtract enough space to get a balanced look, and that will help determine the height of your medicine cabinets.

Thanks all. I plan to go back to the house soon and measure everything so like Kendrah said that will help determine the height. I was not as focused on the height as I was with the width!
