Paint color with green roof on old house?

last year

I have a light gray house with green trim and a green roof and I need a change! - I'd like something that is colorful without being crazy. Help choose a color? I like purple but worry that purple + green will look like Mardi Gras. Home was built in 1905 and in a historic neighborhood (but no paint color restrictions). Some options below... (and I need help picking trim colors, too!)

Neighboring houses are a white brick and a cream stucco.

There are some deep rich dusty brown-purples that would be quite at home on a circa 1900 house. - are any of those pics your house? Do you have anything that would show roof color more? In the meantime for inspiration check out OldHouseGuy's portfolio of exteirior paint colors - https://www.oldhouseguy.com/portfolio/

Thanks! yes - those are all images of my home in different colors. Here's a photo of the home as it currently is (gray + green). Hard to tell the green of the roof - but it's a kelly green shingle.

if your representation of the roof color is accurate (it seems to be a cooler green, with a bit of a blue undertone) then of your choices, only #1 and #5 comes close to appealing to me - but I think they both need a tweak of the siding color. The others are big mismatches of color temp or tone, to my eyes.

Why not white? Lean into the age of your house - back in the early 1900s-10s, white with green roof and black trim was apparently popular - and the 1914 farmhouse that I grew up in had that scheme. Oh, wait, I see that both your neighbors' houses are white - still, do they have trim etc that still would set them apart from a white/black/green roof scheme on your house?

    I like 1, 4 and 8. 8 could lean into orange, too!

Looking at historic homes with green roofs, the colors seem to be white, yellow, red. I love color and just want something more exciting! Here's a white version... it's lovely but would love something different.

  • last year

    I like 1.

How about a blue, with navy (or other darker blue, or even a completely different color) trim? I think there is an opportunity there to have a unique shade of blue in the siding color but one that really works with the roof and allows for that bit of fun in the trim.

The nice thing about a light (especially the white) color is that it really sets off the beautiful window.

    I love #8!

I like what elcieg recommended. Maybe do a light green house color, white trim, and a purple door. Then add in the purple with your porch accessories. Paint the swing purple and add some purple chair cushions.

Maybe add some purple shrubs into the landscape. Your house is very cute.

Here's a light green with light trim and purple door... curious about painting the mullions (I think that's the term) a darker color? (Not sure about a purple door!)

I know you won't like to hear this but your current color looks the best to me. I know you want colorful but your home is already colorful - you have a kelly green roof!

Love the light green with a purple door, but I would use a darker, more eggplant purple.

Kendrah you're not alone :) I just finalized a divorce and (after having lived in a rental for over a year) I am back in this house. It's a good financial decision but hard emotionally! So I really want it to feel new and different.

Congratulations on your "new" house! There are so many good possibilities of colors -- you will have a hard time deciding. You almost can't go wrong, in my opinion. When you've reached a decision and had it painted, stand back and take a picture of it from the street -- I'll bet you will get lots of great ideas and renderings of a renovated, easy-care front landscape.

I like the light green but with a pretty off white trim. I also think the red or yellow with a crisp white trim would be wonderful too!

Again - could we get a better pic of your roof - like from the side? From the little bit we see on the front view it kinda looks bluer and grayer than the more park bench forest green of the trim. If so that would be more versatile, opens up some other possibilities. Are you painting trim? You could take that in a more grayed blue-green direction either dark or midtone. And then if ytou really like purple maybe a gray-mauve - in combination with a grayed green that would not look mardi gras at all. Really, any no. of current colors would fit well with a grayed blue-green. I personally would not do wimpy pastels on this house and I dont like the high-contrast look on this style of house... but hey if you like go for it!

Thanks, DebbieD! - here's a photo of the roof (on the garage) which might show it better. The pitch of the roof makes it hard to get a good photo of the roof on the house itself - but the colors are the same of course.

And yes - I plan to redo the trim!

I like the pale green with white trim - the shade of purple doesn't work for me either, but more of an eggplant (as suggested) could work - so could a blueberry blue.

I assumed that you wouldn't be open to painting the wood door - shame on me!

I still like the strong yellow #8 best with a green trim but if I was going for something completely different to come home to I'd pick #1 and up the (pale) lilac undertone.

I guess essentially I'd reverse the purple door-green house scheme. Green roof, rich white trim, pale lilac house and I'd wait till the end to suprise myself with the door color I thought looked best -- if any paint at all. I really like natural wood doors on any house. I might get a new stained glass insert with a new design.

I just remembered that there was a house on the next block, a 1940s cottage style, that had a unique paint job - IIRC the main siding was a dusty lilac, the trim was a dusty rose - there was a 3rd color in there somewhere, but that I don't remember. Gray roof, I think. They found the combination on one of those "inspiration" cards at the paint store. The effect was really cute, not at all obnoxious or too "out there".

Unfortunately (from my point of view) when the house sold the new owners painted it gray. Dull, drab gray.

I like #1. You can do purple if you get the tone right --- a bit grayed and a shade that goes well with the green.

A purple door and a white house would look pretty

After seeing the roof better, I agree with mytwo cents and think the green roof, white trim, and pale lilac house would look great. The roof seemed a darker green in the first photo. I would pick house 2 but with white trim.

  • last year

A pale blueish-purple or purple-blue with white trim will be pretty.

What stands out to me is the heaviness of the dark trim; it breaks up the house and feels severe. Whatever color you decide on, suggest keeping it simple and tie the roof in with pops of green elsewhere: accessorizing porch, a garden and playing up front door. I’d suggest soft paint color and light trim. Once house is painted, then bring home paint test pots as it‘s the best way to get a sense of what appeals to you.

Blue on top row or gray on bottom row.

#2,3,6 is good. Less busy. Unless u want it busy?

I like Maureen’s suggestion - Sea Salt and ivory trim.

How about in your face feminine? A body color in a warm pink and a darker green door

(something like BM Fruit Shake and BM Desert Twilight).

    pink would be fun :)

and the sea salt + white...

Of your original photos, I like the grey one with the dark windows. But maybe you like one of the others' suggestions better.

    the pink is lovely.

hazy lilac and white trim. might be my favorite??

  • last year

I would start by just painting the trim white…also seeing more of the neighboring homes would influence the color choice… also painting the stone is worth considering as well as removing the old landscaping … to make everything easier at this stage… once greenery is gone you can add smaller shrubs and flowerbeds more in sync with the house

  • last year

I would use a paler pink, but it sure looks sweet in that color… Thanks for the mocks up Louisa.

I would try to find photos of nature that have the roof color and see what other colors in the photo make it look complete. Google nature images for different foliage you like.

I like shades of green with lots of cream like green and white hydrangeas. A lot of those photos have some pink blooms in them.

Or blue spruce with light neutrals like cream and beige tones, maybe with lilac highlights.

I would keep most of the house light neutrals, maybe multiple neutral tones, and decorate it with brightly colored flowers and more greenery.

Something pretty different, inspired by this.
