Black kitchen cabinets. What color floor?

last year

My kitchen cabinets (modern) will be black, with a dark granite countertop and matching backsplash still to be determined. What color should the flooring and walls be? Should I stay with the color theme and have a gray/black/concrete colored flooring and walls or go with a wood look on the floor? My kitchen has a high, sloped ceiling. I don't want wood flooring in the kitchen, but I am ok with tile that looks like wood. I see these darker woods matched up with black cabinets a lot (see examples below), but I am not sure what type/color of wood they are. Computers are bad at displaying real world colors.

I would do grey wood looking floors. There is waterproof tile that looks like wood. I think it would look really good with the black. Or if you like wood tones, a darker brown like walnut.

    Tooooo dark.!

Sorry....... you need a very light tile or a warm wood look tile.

AND please skip gray entirely for that floor.

Well....dark floors with white cabs makes my heart go pitter-patter. That's the pics I was drawn to every time during the design process. While I didn't go with ebony floors, I did choose a dark brown. The contrast is lovely, and it has that old house look to me.

Have you thought about something two-toned? Perhaps a dark bottom (black?) and a lighter top in cherry but unfinished so it appears lighter than your cabs? If not, what about picking a color from the granite (taupe, gray). Which granite do you have? Regardless, I think a black base would be really nice. Do you already have chairs or will you need those too?

Sorry, the first post got away from me! Go ahead and paint the cabinets white and I would paint the walls in a very light gray. But first follow the suggestion above and make sure your LEDs are 4000K or 5000K - which is truer “daylight” color. Then try some samples of paint. Warm white LEDs in the low range make whites turn yellowish. Grays can look very different depending on the light. It took me several tries with sample paint to find a light gray that didn’t turn purple in my north-facing kitchen. 4000K is between "warm white" (2700K/3000K) and "daylight white" (5000K). It is also the color temperature of direct sunlight during morning or afternoon hours.

I would say brushed nickel or stainless steel. I'm the type of person that likes to match things a little bit more and I pay lots more detail those kind of things. Do you plan on having stainless steel appliances? I went with stainless steel knobs because I went with all stainless steel appliances.

Pick the granite first in this case.

It is so moody, I think you have to go all in with a concrete tone floor or super dark almost black wood stain. Be prepared to clean your cabinets and floors all the time - black shows soooo much dirt.

Is the one window your only kitchen window? Your black kitchen will look really different depending on how much light is in your room. Notice this pic below and how this almost black floor actually reflects a lot of light, same with the ultra dark green cabinets.

You are also going to need to light this room extremely well to see in it.

palimpsest, I have to put the floors in first before I can install the cabinets and countertop. So I have to pick the flooring out first. Believe me, I wish that wasn't the case.

I have looked a bit for granite countertops, so I know what I like which would either be cosmos wave or black forest. I haven't tried to secure a slab because timing wise, it is my understanding that a granite place will not hold a slab for 3 months (cabinets are not ordered yet but will be soon). So, I didn't want to invest too much time in looking for a slab (and having to drive 1.5-2 hours to see), until I was actually at a place in the remodel where I could put the slab on hold.

Thank you all for your suggestions and guidance! I have read on here quite a bit that grays floors are out fashion-wise. I am not concerned about that, though. This is my forever home, and I don't need to worry about resale. I'm going to pick what I like because I am the one living with it. If there is another reason to avoid gray flooring, though, that could impact my decision.

    Thanks again!

Just because you are installing floors first doesn’t mean you have to pick them first. Having a good design plan will help you make smarter decisions. It is important that the floors and countertops work well together, so picking them out together will give you a better outcome and you will have more options up front. You can definitely pick the countertops first if that’s an important elect to the design. You just put a deposit on the slab.

Which design is yours? You showed three different designs. Also how much light do you have in the room? Black absorbs light. I would want some contrast in the room, either with wood elements or lighter flooring or wall color so it doesn’t look like a black monolith. The last photo you showed has some pleasing contrast, though I’m not sure I’d want floors that light in a heavily used area. Likewise, if you use something very dark it will also show dust and lint much more than a mid-tone color.

I wouldn’t recommend wood-look tiles. If you don’t want real wood, then find a high quality porcelain or even a slate. A large format concrete-look tile would work nicely with a modern design. However, if you’re going for a more traditional look a slate or slate look would be very nice.

The last photo you posted is a great example of how nicely wood works with black (or anything for that matter). It brings in contrast and a natural feel. I personally think wood in a kitchen is great and prefer it over tile. If you definitely don’t want it for your floor, think about using it as another element in the room.

A polished concrete that works with counter, for cleaner lines, as the granite looks a bit busy (at least in photo).

Paint choice should come last based on the above.

We need to see your kitchen and I am confused as to why black cabinets and black counter . Post a pic of your choices if the kitchen is not installed yet . Post here in a comment DO NOT start another post . As for the wood I agree it will be a great choice with all the dark in fact I would probablt use the same wood for maybe for a couple of the cainets to tie it together . I need to see the space or at least the choices and the layout. BTW you will need amazing lighting all LED 4000K IMO black swallows light like crazy.BTW IMO a woof floor in that space will be the right choice and no wood look tile please.

The picture in the middle above is my kitchen design. Here is another picture that shows another window to the right of the island. My refrigerator and a doorway are on the left. The peak of the sloped ceiling is on the left (where the window is shown sort of truncated). The peak is probably 14-16' high (just a guess).

The opening that shows you the island connects to the living room (you can see part of both of the walls on each side that open to the living room). The sink at the island faces a wall of essentially floor to ceiling windows in the living room. The kitchen will get plenty of light and can handle being black.

I love how the dark wood cabinets and floor contrast with the black in the other design photo that I have attached. But I've done two projects (bathroom and fireplace) where I had 2 tiles that I absolutely loved and I got them to work together nicely, but both projects would have been better if I had just stuck with 1 tile color. So I am reluctant to change some of the cabinets over to something else. Some times it is better to just stick to a theme. The problem with that is then I worry that it could have been so much better if only I had done this or that instead. Plus I am worried about what color wood and what finish (don't want it to look too rustic). Plus the color of the walls and color of the chairs is going to impact everything. It would be so wonderful if I could just install one thing at a time in the space to see how it looks.

I like the first picture best but think you need the waterfall island, the dark brown textured uppers, open shelving, white walls and dark gold accents to break up the black and give it life. I love the more subtle stone/dekton (whatever it is) in your iinspiration pic. Your stone seems too busy for this style, imo. Don't like the wood floors.

I would avoid gray because you risk it clashing with the other dark tones of your kitchen. Grays are very difficult to complement to each other. Here are dark cabinets with a lighter concrete-look tile floor:

Your first picture with the dark slate-like matte flooring is good for me. It appears to have a light grout. If so, use an epoxy or urethane grout to retain the light color. You'll need task lighting, ambient and possibly accent. 3500k led is what I'd use. Home - DMF Lighting

Thank you dan1888 for the lighting website. I love the cylinders. Shasta, the dekton (Laurent) is what got me started down this path. After reading horror stories on here about chipping on dekton countertops, I passed on that idea and figured I better stay with a granite.

So I tried a bunch of suggestions based on comments. Here's some things that I came up with. I put a wood shelf across the top of the black cabinets in the bottom one to try to tie in the wood aspect. I honestly am not sure of the point of it, I was just trying to get the wood in the design without doing wood cabinets. The granite makes it a bit over the top, but computers are not completely accurate of reality, and actually, I kind of like the over the top aspect of it all. I think it I were to switch to wood wall cabinets at this point, my cabinet person would be very distressed.

Thank you all again for the guidance!

I'll be honest and say the gray floors among the choices you show has a prison-feel to me, even when it's veined or slate looking.

If you are not averse to over the top (I never am) have you considered cork?

I think it might look really nice with your corrugated cabinets

    HU-227031627 thanked mytwo cents

Cork would look terrific and I imagine feel great on the feet. I think it would be too maintenance intensive for me. Plus I have cats, big dogs, and children. Sigh. Tradeoffs with everything.

I think you need to bring the cabinets to the ceiling. They look squatty and undercuts the bold look that doing a dark kitchen brings. I also think the countertops are too busy. In your second post the first photo feels way too cool and is lacking in warmer elements. I keep gravitating towards the first photo in your original post. Was that your inspo pic? It is stunning. Notice how The dark wood still adds warmth as does the gold veining in the countertops. However everything is still very muted and understated. I think a dark kitchen is a very bold design choice (I am a huge fan) but you may need to hire a pro designer on this. Houzz is a good start, but in-person expertise would be more than worth it.

Where is this floor transitioning to the rest of the rooms? If it’s open concept you would want the floors to all be the same so they flow and it doesnt look all chopped up. If you are older or plan on growing old in this home, I would not want tile or concrete to have to stand on in the kitchen. If you are doing wood in the rest of the rooms, I would carry it into the kitchen. Today’s finishes are really durable and very easy to keep clean. If you get site finished wood, they can easily be refinished if they get too much patina for you. But light wood floors do not show marks or dirt like dark colors.

HU I think a terrazzo floor would be awesome and stick to your design elements. I agree with the person who said take your cabinets to the ceiling, but don’t do grey or white cabinets. Stick with the black or wood as in your first photos. Is the granite in the last pictures you posted the one you are using? It is beautiful but please no white!!
