Living Room Design Dilemma

Tricky Living Room Layout

Hi all. I’m having a hard time creating a seating zone in this remodeled 1930’s townhouse living room. I’d like to seat 4 and have a tv. I’m thinking of adding an electric fireplace where the original fireplace was sealed. Any ideas would be very helpful. I also do not love the color on the wall.

Tv is the corner by the stairs. sofa on the long wall. chair on the angled wall by the sofa.

by the bottom of the stairs, a desk or bench making that area its own space.

And rugs? I have no idea how a rug would fit in this room and if I should use a smaller rug to zone the seating. Thanks!

I think you can take advantage of both focal points with two sofas facing each other and the TV opposite the fireplace. Behind one of the sofas can be a sofa table and two armchairs oriented towards the patio view. A bench under the window to the right of the fireplace could serve as a window seat. Opposite the window may a be a good spot for some bookshelves. Below is the idea.

Here’s what I would suggest. This way you are taking advantage of any views you may have. The dining area is now more accessible to the kitchen. Any clothing type storage would be right outside the bedroom. Suggest taping out the sofa and chair on the floor so you get the right sizes.

Your TV would definitely need to come down a couple of inches. It would make for much better viewing. A smaller couch (3 seater but more compact) would make room for a small end table. You could add a pair of accent chairs or add one chair and get a couple of ottomans that can be pushed away when you don't need them. For the TV, I'd get a media cabinet and maybe add a tall bookcase in the corner. You can liven up the room by adding some peppy wall art since the room is a bit boring right now. Alternatively, you could add a nice mirror to the wall too. A rug would really add to this space and define the entire area. If this was to be my apartment, I’d put a round pedestal table in the plant room, with four good chairs(I’d prefer 6 and put the other two to use in the entry or bedroom), find or build or commission a console table for behind the sofa (as in backing up to the sofa) and use that to spread out my work, hold a lamp, vase, etc. so if I had a few friends over for a meal we could sit at the table in the plant room, more than a few I could pull out the long console table to seat more, a whole bunch of people for a party and the console table could hold snacks or act as a bar, etc.

I'd put the TV on the angled wall.

large rug to designate area. Sofa facing large room opening & TV. fill in with occasional chairs to fit. Opposite side of room with a complimentary rug. Sideboard/credenza under eye level window with Lamp.
