Personally I hate the look of saltillo tile (or look alike) and I took out a few thousand square feet of it in my current house. It covered floors, patio, bathrooms (floors, counters, backsplash, walls and showers). It is a very "bossy" look and color and will drive any decor changes you want to make. We chose to remove it as we remodeled the rooms over the last 9 years. We bought the house knowing we had the budget to make those changes. I would decide if you are keeping it or changing it. This will affect what changes you make to other areas while you save up for the project.

In Europe they ignore floors like these and simply go about their renovating. The floors stay (get a healthy cleaning/resealing as part of the flooring budget) and everything else moves along as if they aren't there. A light and bright kitchen can be achieved with a floor like this. I love white-on-white kitchens. With a floor that has so much colour and warmth you can have a very bright kitchen that does not feel sterile. I'm someone who LOVES Red Acrylic high-gloss cabinets and bright white counters. Scandi modern is my wheelhouse. That may not be where you are heading, but those floors could still handle it. In Europe they LOVE to layer the ages. One on top of another. You can have a 400 year facade (and internal stairs) coupled with 1000 year old 'repurposed' oak doors (scavenged from and old castle that had been demolished years before), terracotta floors and a wildly modern interior. And sometimes you will find Art Deco glass interior windows in the oddest places. You may not be so keen as the Europeans but it is entirely doable. A great option is TRANSITIONAL. That's when there are modern and traditional components that make the kitchen feel modern, well built and usable.

My DH could do it. So thinking if yours does DIY--and you are always happy with the results he probably can. It is not difficult and does not take 'special skills' it takes being patient and PICKY. Attention to detail and being very particular are the most important factors in your tile person. If they CARE it will turn out--if they get frustrated and decide oh well this is ok..it could be bad.
