Water softener and RO filter
Comments (14)The groundwater system I worked at has a big problem with iron bacteria. The old well pipes and casings were steel and every few years they would need to be replaced due to holes and clogging. Every year we had a professional well company shock the wells with EPA/USF approved chemicals and flush for a couple days. They eventally had to rebuild the wells with stainless and pvc components which helped a lot on the water treatment part. Are any of your parts carbon steel or iron? Also, it's common for there to a high amount of manganese in groundwater that has a large amount of iron. If the black stuff if somewhat grimey and slick it is very likely manganese. Red/brown is almost always iron. Potassium permanganate is what we used for iron/manganese controls then we aerated the water before filtration. But to second as stated before. Get the water tested by a lab that is certified to test water. Not by a pool store, plumber, or anyone trying to sell you anything....See MoreFiltered water faucet at sink?
Comments (37)I am adding some photos in case they are helpful to anyone. I have a "cluttered sink." ;) I am ok with it because it still looks balanced and is a large sink. It has a bridge faucet (Grohe Bridgeford) w/ side spray and a R/O cold water faucet (Newport Brass.... they match really well for different brands!) The R/O faucet was added after we moved in as we realized we needed to further purify our rural well water. We used the hole/space the air gap had used. Of course, the water softener ppl will say this is perfectly fine.... but our plumber agreed later on that it should be fine. (In some parts of the country, air gaps aren't required by code. In some they are. If we sell our house, we'll have to put the air gap back to pass inspection.) What I like about our set up is that the faucets have plenty of room to swing completely. My hubby and I can easily stand side-by-side at the sink, both using a faucet. This happens often. RE: the speed of the faucet.... the R/O faucet is quite slow. It isn't as bad as the filters you can add on to your existing faucet, but it's close. Since I'm normally only filling a glass of water, I don't mind. I got used to the speed and waiting some extra seconds. It certainly takes less time than going to the store and hauling home bottled water. :)...See MoreCrazy or Feasible? Trash Pull-Outs Under Sink???
Comments (19)The only reason I didn't do pullouts was my sink is 10 inches deep and undermounted. The larger bins I wanted would have been right under the sink if on a pullout platform. I decided to have them freestanding and be able to put something in them without moving them rather than have stuff possibly rub on the bottom of the sink as it got full. There is a disposal, instant hot tank, never MT and large soap bottle, two baskets of cleaning supplies and two DW connections under there as well as trash and recycling. Works for me....See Moreconfused about under sink water filtration - help with faucet
Comments (5)There is a lot to be said here but I will restrain myself. For only charcoal filtration, any faucet should work. Use a charcoal filter that is standard size (guessing without moving my keister to measure that standard means 3 inches in diameter by about 10 inches long.) Pressure drop should be modest until depleted so flow would be high. With R.O. water, one needs a pressure tank and at least 3/8 poly tubing to use with a standard faucet. One may also need other active components to keep the pressure up. My R.O. system feeds a Brizo Venuto, a Brizo pot filler, a plant wand, a refrigerator ice maker, and eventually a bar sink faucet. However, I have a peristaltic brine-driven pump from Spectrapure, and two pressure tanks. With R.O. filtration, it is possible in some cases for the resulting water to become soft and acidic, and this can leach lead where present. For such cases, a lead free faucet is needed. My R.O. input is municipal water that has been dosed at the source with alkali chemicals, and pH measurements show that it is still alkaline after R.O. filtration. kas...See MoreRelated Professionals
