@Matthew Lubow - Sorry I was unclear... I should have said, If you use a range, it will have to be a slide in range rather than a freestanding range. That was largely in response to the idea of extra fabrication of counter materials. Even with a range you will have a strip of counter fabricated behind the slide in range. You also noted that you occasionally slide your range out, which is a bit harder because the range will be lowered to rest on the countertop.

You also don't really need to move the cooktop back for the hood to be effective. That was particular nugget of wisdom was from someone who typically adds their rather pessimistic perspective on most posts here.

The burners on a standard American range are moved forward. In fact, in a typical install the front burners on a standard range are going to be pretty close to the edge of the countertop and a normal hood works fine for them. The burners on a cooktop are recessed several inches compared to those of a range and therefore you really don't need to adjust the cooktop position back for the hood to be just as effective as it would be for a range.

Look how far forward the burners actually are on both of those.

Standard cooktop installation:

See how much further back the burners are already. Even if you pull the entire unit forward the full 2.5", the burners will likely still not be as far forward, and therefore the hood will be just as effective, as a standard U.S. range installed under that same hood.
