Granite benchtops - installing in an L shape

Hi all,
I have a kitchen going in which has a large(3 x 2 meter) L shaped island bench. I went and looked at a lot of granites and chose one. The stone supplier advised me to ask for vein matching as many installers will not cut an L out of the one slab, but will cut two pieces and the turn one around 90 degrees. Ths means the pattern is completely different.
And he advised me to make them cut it on a 45 degree angle at the join so that I get 2 long areas of granite, not as 2 rectangles. Otherwise the join is very obvious.
Is that how everyoe has their stone bench tops joined. the installer indeed tried to get away (twice) with a straight join and non matching patterns. I looks horrible and now they are saying that is the only way to do it?
