Small kitchen design help

Hello! I'm having a small modular built for a guest house on our property. I'm thinking of using a 28 inch refrigerator and not sure if I should use a standardslide in range or a 24 inch? The island will probably have 2 three drawer cabinets for storage. Another concern is the size of the kitchen window, is it too small?I appreciate any help or suggestions!Thanks,EK

Here are a few tips: 1. Photos are helpful, but you have to provide a floorplan. We can't help without that. 2. Minor changes can be good - I combined my breakfast nook with my Kitchen (1920's house). But if you are thinking about big modifications - adding on, etc. then think about a different house instead. This house would probably fit someone else with a smaller family just fine.

I agree with mama goose's suggestion. This is a much better set up. I personally think that unloading the dishwasher from here would be no problem. Id probably keep plates in one of the drawers in the island as well as all my cutlery. To me across the isle is not a big deal. Plus having one less corner and not having your fridge block the door is a huge plus.

Hi, I am designing/decorating my small dining area within my kitchen. I am thinking about doing window seating with a small farmhouse style table and 2 upholstered chairs on the opposite side. I am also thinking about changing the lighting to the one in the attached picture. Also, please let me know your thoughts on whether I should add a rug under the dining area? Thank you mama goose. Thank you for the counter space visualization. It doesn't look like we may get that much back moving from the galley to the dining space,plus more work to change out window and re-do plumbing/gas line to over there.. If we move the dining room to the kitchen I was thinking of a narrow banquet on one side of the walls. Its just two of us so 90% of the time we don't need a big eating area. I was thinking if we move the kitchen to the dining space most of the eating will be at the island. I mainly wonder how annoying it will be having an island to go around each time as in the summer we mostly use the back french doors to go in and out the house. Additionally I have dogs that I am constantly letting and out from there..

If you can find a way to do a standard range I would. And, I'd try to make the window larger. I'd make the corner upper cabinets a 90 "L" instead of a diagonal. Diagonal fronts make a space look smaller.

Definitely a standard oven. Going smaller than 30" oven makes it difficult to fit many standard baking or roasting pans. And it's really nice to have 4 burners on the cooktop. Speaking from experience--I lived for two years with a kitchen that was just range, sink, DW, and fridge. A smaller oven would have made everything even harder.

A smaller fridge makes sense--maybe look at models that are skinny but very tall. You might also consider an 18" DW to get a bit more storage space. The kitchen window is fine. You've got nice windows in the rest of the open area that will bring in plenty of light. Go ahead and maximize storage in the kitchen area.

I like a corner cabinet -- it's going to look small because it IS small, but the extra utility and reachability are great.

If "guest house" means occasional visitors, I'd do the smaller range. If someone will be living there full time, then 30. If storage and everyday workspace is a concern, and budget is flexible, things can be even better. :)

But it's okay as is.

I would:
- Also replace the corner wall cabinet with an "L"-shaped cabinet. The cabinet is right next to the range and will be in the face of someone working there.
- Retain the 24" range as there isn't much counter space on either side. Both this Blomberg BERU24202SS radiant electric range and ZLINE RAINDBG24 induction range are pretty nice.
- Consider reducing the size of the refrigerator from 28" to 24" which would allow you to increase the width of the cabinet and countertop on the left side of the range (12" is very tight); include drawers for pots and pans in this cabinet. Both the Electrolux EI12BF25US and Whirlpool WRB543CMJZ would work. Yes there would be less refrigerator space but how many groceries will a person in a guest house have?
