I'd probably lean towards finding a new spot for it -- but with highs in the 90s, it's not the best time to be moving it. Figs in the ground generally don't need fertilizer, expecially N or any application after late spring, but you might giving that a try. You might want to dig up a few roots to see if they appear normal or whether they have nodules, in which case it might be infected with nematodes (see this thread). Nematodes might explain its poor performance. If infested you might want to stick to potted figs (you'd need to buy a new plant, and use a commercial potting mix, and don't set the pot directly on the soil where the nematodes could migrate up.)

I just saw your posting on my thread about yellow leaves. Glad to hear you pinched back some of your plants. Don't worry, they will be fine! It is the right thing to do. For Valentines day, my husband and children brought me to a nursery, I bought two established mother geraniums, brought them home, and cut off all the new growth, 11 pieces off each plant. All that was left was a fairly woody stalk, and a couple leaves on both plants, to which, my enthusastic 4 year old yanked off! My husband was horrified, having no idea with what I wanted them for. He is thinking "Gee, I did good getting those plants for her" and then he walks into the room to see that I have hacked them to pieces! I potted all the cuttings, and then left the mother plants alone. I now have the results, 22 baby Pelargoniums growing and thriving, and 2 mother Pelargoniums sporting their own new leaves! It really is incredible!

Is the pot moveable? If so, I'd move it from in front of the window to a more protected spot, and leave it alone for a month or two. If you do decide to cut it back (which from what I understand of this variety, should not be too big a deal), take cuttings. These should be relatively easy, though this is a bad time of year for cuttings of most perennials like this. Again, if you can move it to a less obvious spot, and wait a month or two for the weather to warm up, and let it start to regenerate on its own, the cuttings you strike then will be better able to root and do well. BTW, mine sailed through the cold snap we had a few weeks back. It's looking pretty good, though a bit leggy. It will definitely need a hair cut this spring, but I do think its a little early yet. My guess is that the best time to trim would be about the same time for most of the Mediterranean herbs like thyme and lavender, just before they start to really pop new growth. Usually here that's around the end of February, early March. But then, this is only the second winter I've had mine, and I didn't trim it back last year. Wish I had as it got a little leggier and sprawlier than I would have liked, but them's the breaks. Maybe someone with more direct experience will be able to say more accurately.

I can understand how you feel -- my stepdaughter stayed with us last summer (on break from college) and I will not allow her to stay here again (my husband supports me because she went out drinking every night, went through all of my closets, drawers, etc. and stole my belongs -- then, of course lied). So, my question is are you concerned about leaving her alone because of her age or because of what she might do alone in your house (mine came for a lunch w/Dad and her grandmother for Christmas and I asked my husband to promise he would not let her out of his sight....he didn't! Nothing was stolen.) I guess the part about he told you and didn't ask bothers me.....I mean I have made demands to my husband about her NOT coming, but he fully understands how she totally violated me this summer and disrespects him so he agrees (lunch at Christmas was a compromise! If she comes into my house, you promise to watch her and not let her anywhere near my closets, jewelry box, etc!). If you think she is ok to be alone and won't do any damage, I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all. In fact.....do you have someplace you could go visit for a week or 2?! It sure ain't easy for us stepmoms, is it?!!!!! (I do have a great stepson full-time though....so I do see the value we/they can bring, but when it's bad....it's pretty awful!)
