planting tree in heavy clay

I’m on the eastern shore of MD. We have light grey clay soil that you could throw on a potters wheel. I have a tree to plant about 5 feet tall. I’ve dug a hole and watered it to see what the drainage might be like and the water is still sitting there overnight. Small yard, crape myrtles everywhere. Landscaping throughout the neighborhood. It’s a styrax. I have to plant it or give it away.
Does anyone from this area have suggestions on planting? I will plant it high and wide. Is that about all I can do?
