I wouldn't attempt anything with the stairs, but I would change several doorways. You already show a doorway between the kitchen and the other porch, so if possible, I would:

- eliminate the door between the LR and stairs

- eliminate the door between the kitchen and stairs

- create an opening/doorway between the two porches

It's not ideal, but I think it would be better than what I'm seeing. It would allow you to safely go from the kitchen, through the porch to the stairs. What you'd also need is access from the kitchen to the dining room.... so then you could go from kitchen, through DR, to get to the LR.
