Monarch wings: To trim or not to trim?
Comments (18)Unfortunately, if the wings have dried, that's their final shape. On emergence, the most critical time for a butterfly is while its expanding its wings. There is a limited time for this process. After a period of time, the wings harden. If the butterfly is touched or handled during this period, it may interfere with the process resulting in failure of wing formation. Weather and temperature are factors as well. This may be a case of "survival of the fittest". In nature, there are some failures, usually due to a deficiency or other stroke of bad luck....See MoreTo trim or not to trim...

Comments (8)Older homes in my area usually have casing around openings which were actual doorways but no casing around openings between rooms. Homes of the 30s and 40s often are the beginning of the era of shared spaces with fewer closed off rooms. For example, one home I have is from the early 40s where the dining room has three trimmed doorways, kitchen, upstairs and exterior, and two openings, to the living room and to the bed, bath hallway. The openings are arched tops without casing. My opinion is doorways between separate rooms should be cased. If a doorway is changed out to become an opening between two spaces, it should be widened to look intentional rather than just a missing door. My current house was built in 1933 and had a swinging door between the kitchen and dining room. We removed the doorway and changed it to a wider arched opening, same width and shape as between foyer and living room, to keep the details consistent....See MoreWindows without trims and doors with trims?
Comments (3)I am probably going to have my trimless interior doors trimmed up at some point. Too much abuse happens with people and dogs and bags and boxes and moving things around etc. They get banged up easy and the novelty wears off pretty quick. Unless you just sort of float thru your house on a cloud......See MoreRelated Professionals
